CANADIAN RED CROSS: FIRST AID FOR OPIOID POISONING EMERGENCIES

As we have all come to learn too well, the opioid crisis in Canada has devasting effects on individuals, families, communities, and our healthcare systems. Tragically, this crisis has worsened since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a staggering 7,560 deaths recorded in 2021. This represents a 72% increase over 2020!

To address these alarming and increasing figures, Canadian Red Cross, through funding from Health Canada, has developed a free online courseFirst Aid for Opioid Poisoning Emergencies.

The course aims to empower participants to become knowledgeable and confident in responding to an opioid poisoning emergency and also enables them to receive a free nasal naloxone kit upon course completion. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that temporarily reverses the life-threatening effects of opioid poisoning. The course takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete and includes the following:

  • Learn about opioids and how they affect the body
  • Explore factors that can affect the risk of an opioid poisoning
  • Discuss ways to reduce the influence of stigma and gain strategies for self-care
  • Understand how naloxone works and how to administer naloxone

Collectively, we can make a difference in reducing opioid-related deaths by raising awareness and ensuring Canadians have the skills, knowledge, and tools to prevent, recognize, and respond to opioid poisoning.

Where to Get Your Zoom Links for Virtual Courses

If you have registered for a virtual course, PD&T will email you a day or two before the course with all details and the meeting link. The link will not be in Eventbrite as we cannot provide this on a public platform.

Please check that you have the meeting link in advance of your course.

If you haven’t received the email notice with the course info, please get in touch with support@dgcontario.ca.

Course Fees

As of January 1, 2023, the Professional Development & Training Program has reinstated the practice, that was in place prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, of including a fee schedule for courses.

This has become fiscally necessary due to the impact the number of cancellations and no-shows has had on the organization on both an administrative and financial level.

A revised structure for course fees has been established based on mandatory/voluntary courses and course length, with mandatory courses being either no fee, or a deposit that is reimbursed upon attendance.

Please see below for an overview, or click here for further details.

Please provide notice of cancellation if you can't attend a course you have registered for:

When registering for a course, please keep in mind that it is essential that you provide notice of cancellation if you are unable to attend. Many courses have waitlists, and when you do not provide sufficient notice, it takes a spot away from another Member that wants to be there.

In addition, it impacts our PD&T program financially when we do not run a course at capacity. If you need to cancel your registration, please email

Cristy Becker at cbecker@dgcontario.ca at least 24 hours in advance.

Cancellation Policy:

For courses where fees are charged, if the Member notifies PD&T via email at least 24 hours prior to the start of the course, a full refund will be issued. If notice is given less than 24 hours in advance, no refunds will be issued, and the Member will forfeit their full payment. If no notice of cancellation is given, the Member will forfeit their full payment.
