Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Kayla Yokoyama Dodge! A valued member of our Board of Trustees, Kayla has been volunteering and giving back to South Central LAMP for the past five years.

Why I Volunteer

I first started working with South Central LAMP with Mayfield Senior School's Alum Council. We gathered books for a book drive, jackets for a winter coat drive, and helped with a spring festival for the families.

When I attended the women’s graduation a few years back, I knew that this was something I wanted to be a part of on a larger scale. It was exciting to see the graduates and all their supporters. Hearing the women’s stories brought their experiences to life and truly inspired me.

One of my main focuses in life is empowering women. I really believe in SCLAMP's mission, because when you help mothers, you help families, and the entire community. Becoming a mother myself made this even clearer to me. South Central LAMP provides a village for these mothers, and I see that every time I visit.

My favorite volunteer experience with SCLAMP is Beautifying Day. On this day, we get to spruce up the campus by participating in things like painting and gardening. Another of my favorite events is the Toy Wrapping event during Christmastime. I’ve invited friends to join me, and they have also seen the magic of this wonderful organization.

To those who are interested in volunteering, I suggest choosing an on-campus activity. Here, you can experience the amazing energy of the mothers and children. Even if classes are not in session, you can peek inside the rooms and see the great work that goes on at SCLAMP.

Whether it’s a Beautifying Day, the LA Big 5K run, or the Thanksgiving Food Drive - you won’t regret any time you spend at or with South Central LAMP - in fact, it may change your life!

Volunteer Opportunities!

Reading to Children in their Classrooms

Throughout the school year, we have numerous opportunities to engage with our students through reading activities in their classrooms. From celebrating International Literacy Day to participating in Reading Across America, these events provide fantastic avenues for us to contribute positively to our community.

By volunteering to read to our students, we not only help foster a love for reading but also support their educational development in meaningful ways. Whether it's sharing a favorite book or simply encouraging their reading habits, these activities offer valuable moments to connect with and inspire our young learners.

We hope you will help support the educational growth and enthusiasm of our little learners.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Every year it is our goal to feed 100 families in our community by Thanksgiving. We hope you will consider organizing a food drive for South Central LAMP at your workplace, school, or place of worship!

We invite you to collect essential food items and drop off your donations on Monday, November 18, 2024 by 1:00 PM. Your generosity can make a significant difference in the lives of our families.

We are also seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with sorting the collected food items. If you’re available, please join us from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Monday, November 18, 2024. Your support in sorting and organizing the food donations will be invaluable and greatly appreciated. Let’s come together to make this event a success and help our community thrive!
