NOTICE TO LIVE OAK DRIVE RESIDENTS

Upcoming Work at Live Oak Drive for 495 NEXT Project

Portion of old noise wall to be removed starting in February;

to be replaced with new, upgraded noise wall

I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) Project

Starting as early as February, crews on the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will begin removing the northernmost 400 feet (approximately) of the 30 year-old noise wall along Live Oak Drive.

This section of old noise wall is being removed to allow activities to begin so that the permanent Live Oak Drive can be built as shown in the approved plans.

Approximately 400 feet of old noise wall will be removed to enable temporary paving along Live Oak Drive, and will be replaced with new, upgraded noise wall.

Residents Should Expect the Following Work Activities:

  1. Old noise wall panels and posts will be removed and transported off-site.
  2. The area where temporary paving will occur will be graded and temporary drainage facilities will be built.
  3. Temporary pavement will be placed.
  4. Traffic will be shifted temporarily onto the new alignment on this section of Live Oak Drive.
  5. Limited additional tree clearing will occur in existing VDOT right-of-way and easements still to be acquired (subsequent advance notice will be provided to nearby residents when the timing of additional tree clearing is further defined).
  6. Fairfax Water and Dominion Energy will relocate utility lines adjacent to the Langley Swim and Tennis Club and a short stretch of the neighborhood side of existing Live Oak Drive.
  7. Crews will begin constructing the new, permanent alignment of Live Oak Drive.
  8. When the new, permanent Live Oak Drive is completed and opened to traffic, new and upgraded noise wall will be installed to replace the old wall. This installation currently is expected to occur in late summer/early fall.

As required by federal and state regulations, erosion and sediment controls will be installed to prevent disturbed soil from running off into Scott’s Run and other nearby waterways, and cleared areas will be seeded to prevent erosion. For safety reasons, Live Oak Drive periodically will be reduced to a single lane with flagging operations alternately directing traffic north and south.

Additional Near-Term Work on Live Oak Drive

In early 2023, work will begin on the eastern and western abutments of the new Live Oak Drive Bridge over I-495. In mid-2023, crews will lift steel girders in place connecting the completed abutments with the center pier of the new bridge, followed by construction of the concrete deck. The existing Live Oak Drive Bridge will remain open to traffic during these activities.

In mid-2023, the remaining approximately 900 feet of old noise wall along Live Oak Drive will be removed to make way for excavation and construction of retaining walls, which will support the new upgraded noise wall. Additional grading and drainage work will be performed along the curved portion of Live Oak Drive north of the old noise wall.

Shown in blue, the remaining segment of the old noise wall that extends from the Live Oak Drive Bridge will be removed and replaced with new, upgraded noise wall.

495 NEXT project crews work on constructing the center pier of the replacement Live Oak Drive Bridge, which is being built immediately south of the existing bridge.
