UPCOMING AT OR CHADASH

A Message from the Rabbi:

Dear Members of Or Chadash,
I want to share with you a statement from our Jewish community that speaks to our sense of loss, of sorrow and of hope.

Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters of the Chabad of Poway, CA, on the loss of their beloved member, Lori Gilbert Kaye, who was murdered in the brutal attack on their synagogue this past Shabbat as they marked the end of Passover. We pray for healing for all the members of their community who sustained injuries of body and spirit, and we join with them and with all good-hearted people in denouncing hatred and intolerance in all its forms.

This latest attack on people at prayer in their house of worship came six months to the day after the deadliest attack in the history of American Jewry, the assault on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh which took the lives of 11 innocent women and men. Clearly, there is a pattern and a purpose to such acts of violence, be they against Jews, Muslims, Christians, or people of any faith. They are intended to divide us, to disrupt our way of life, and to sow discord among us. As with all acts of terror, they seek to instill fear; fear of one another, and fear of carrying on our lives in accordance with our faith.

In our local community, as in many other places, we have seen how these horrible events have had the opposite of their intended effects. Instead of tearing us apart, they have brought us closer together and strengthened our bonds of kinship and solidarity as a multi-faith community. This must continue to be our response. We must not grant the perpetrators victory by succumbing to fear. We must redouble our commitment to gather in our individual houses of worship to practice our faith, and we must seek out opportunities to join together to support one another in times of joy and sorrow.

Sadly, our resolve to carry on and live freely as Jews in America today is not sufficient in light of the rising tide of anti-Semitism. We cannot merely wish our legitimate fears away. We must take concrete steps to secure our synagogues and institutions so that all can feel safe within their walls. At Or Chadash we have already begun to do just that, and in the coming days our leadership will be sharing further details of our efforts to date and our almost completed plans to enhance our security going forward.

Immediately after the attack in Poway, the rabbi at the Chabad, Yisroel Goldstein, urged all Jews respond by gathering en masse in their synagogues this coming Shabbat, and to banish the darkness of hate by performing acts of kindness to bring more light into the world. Let us heed his call by reaching out to one another and to our neighbors, and by coming together at Or Chadash for Shabbat this Friday at 7 PM for a very special service of Klezmer music and song. Invite your neighbors of all faiths to come with you and join us as we celebrate the sanctity of life and God's gift of freedom for all.

Shalom,

Rabbi Joe Forman

SCRIP CORNER

Announcing a NEW raffle for the months of April, May, and June!  Those who place orders each month will be eligible to win a $25 gift card!  Get in on the fun!

So far this year, our scrip orders have earned Or Chadash just over $1000.  We've had 24 families place orders.

There were 12 families who placed orders in each month -- January, February, and March -- to be eligible to win our first raffle.  And our lucky winner is.... Lisa Tauscher!  Lisa wins a $25 gift card for Lands End.  Congratulations, Lisa!  And thank you to all 12 of you who made the commitment to ordering each month!

Can scrip save the day?  Check this out:
$500 of ShopRite scrip each month for a year = $240 earnings for Or Chadash.
50 families ordering $500 of ShopRite scrip each month for a year = adds up to $12,000 earnings for OC.
We can do this!

For April, our order deadline will be Monday, April 15.  It's never too late to get in on this fundraising gem!  Scrip is another name for gift cards, and when you sign up to buy them on the shopwithscrip website, every purchase you make earns Or Chadash much-needed (free) funds.  There are hundreds of retailers, offering varying percentages back to Or Chadash.  And Or Chadash shares the benefits with you as credit on your dues.  This is truly a win-win opportunity!  Take a look at the shopwithscrip website, and please contact Christine Berg with any questions:  cberg3@comcast.net
