Or Chadash announces Free Religious School for Grades K/1/2 and New Young Family Membership
Or Chadash, The Reform Synagogue of Hunterdon County has recently announced that it is offering free Religious School to all children in grades Kindergarten, First and Second Grade. Or Chadash has also created a new membership category called "Young Family Members."
Families whose eldest child is in Second grade or below can participate in all the activities and programming at Or Chadash, as "Young Family Members" for a nominal annual fee of $180.
Or Chadash welcomes families interested in learning about Jewish life to our fun Sunday morning educational program.
Students in grades Kindergarten, First and Second gather on Sunday mornings from 10:15 AM to 12 noon during the academic school year. The morning begins with a community prayer session, Tefillah and an oneg, where students practice the blessings for challah (motzi) and juice (kiddish). Younger children then transition to Jewish Studies where they are introduced to Bible Stories, Jewish Values, Holidays using crafts, storytelling and hands-on exploration as learning vehicles. Older students in Grades 3 - 6 join us from 9 AM to 12 noon on Sunday mornings, with the first hour dedicated to introducing students to the Hebrew language.
Or Chadash also offers Temple Tots, a free program open to the community for children ages 2 to 5. Temple Tots meets monthly on Sundays at 11 AM. Through crafts, song, storytelling and activities, children (accompanied by an adult) learn about the Jewish holidays.
Or Chadash has recently adopted the "Hebrew Through Movement" curriculum. "Hebrew Through Movement" is a language acquisition strategy in which students learn Hebrew by hearing and responding to Hebrew phrases. "Hebrew Through Movement" introduces Hebrew in a playful and meaningful way, creating a positive first link between children and Hebrew. In "Hebrew Through Movement" the teacher offers commands and the students react to the language. When learners hear "Lakoom", they stand up and when they hear "Lashevet", they sit down. This creates a very social experience, bringing everyone into the fun and engaging learning process. "Hebrew Through Movement" assumes that languages patterns are as important as vocabulary. Students internalize language patterns that they hear repeatedly without having to formally learn rules of grammar.
"This school is fun! There is action in this class, we get to move.", said Jordan Wolf, a fourth grader from Union Township. "I love everything about Religious School, especially the time we are singing the prayers." Parents have shared that children are spontaneously using Hebrew words at the dinner tables and are requesting to have more "Hebrew Through Movement" classroom time!
In addition to educational programming for younger students, Or Chadash offers classes for grades 7, a post Bar/Bat Mitzvah program for grades 8 - 10, and adult education.
Or Chadash, The Reform Temple of Hunterdon County, welcomes people from all faiths, Jewish and non-Jewish, and encourages everyone to participate in Jewish life. For more information about Or Chadash Religious School, please contact:
