UPCOMING AT OR CHADASH

Quick Links:

Dear Members of Or Chadash:

The 2019 Kickoff Meeting of the Or Chadash Social Action Committee is scheduled for Thursday, January 17th at 7 PM at Or Chadash.

Social Action for Reform Judaism consists of three basic elements: Education Programs, Deeds of Loving Kindness, and Advocacy for Specific Issues.  One of a Reform synagogue's most important missions is to work toward fixing social injustices.  This is your opportunity to work with us on such issues as the environment, voting rights, hunger, immigration, affirmative action, and more.

Our meeting will focus on discussions to further define the issues we wish to address and to formulate and implement our action plan.

All are welcome to attend and participate and be part of the solution.  We hope to see you there.

Shalom,

  Joe

Rabbi Joseph M. Forman

January 25th at 7 PM -
Special Music Service for Shabbat Shira:
Freedom Shabbat - Celebrating Songs from
the  Civil Rights era featuring  K.G. and the
Shabbat Band*

For generations Jews have celebrated freedom and liberation from tyranny and oppression. So, when the Civil Rights movement started in the 60s, it was natural that Jews would join African Americans in their march for freedom. Prominent Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel joined Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as he marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama on March 21, 1965.  After the historic march Heschel said, "It felt like my legs were praying."

This year we will celebrate Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 21st. The following  Friday we will celebrate Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song, at 7PM. On this Shabbat, communities around the world celebrate with services filled with music, commemorating Miriam's crossing of the Red Sea dancing with her companions, timbrel in hand. This year at Or Chadash we will celebrate with songs of Freedom from the 60s, when Martin Luther King, Jr. marched for the freedom of all people.

We hope you will join us on Friday, January 25th for our tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If you would like to be a part of the "Shabbat Band", please contact me. We will have a rehearsal on Sunday, January 20th.  Stay tuned for more details.

Many Bles-sings,

Cantor Kathy Gohr

*The Shabbat Band is YOU!
If you would  like to join the band,  please let Cantor Kathy   know.
You can play the tambourine, the  saxophone or the xylophone!
