Dear Members of the Or Chadash Community,

On Tishah B'Av beginning this Saturday, we traditionally mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Today, many congregations and communities also mark the day by mourning present-day disasters, such as environmental degradation and climate change.

This year as we grieve for the damage humanity has done to the Earth and the countless lives lost to climate change, we must harness our power to limit future harm This summer, Congress is working on legislation that has the potential to advance environmental justice and support the transition to a clean economy.

Take action for comprehensive climate legislation!

An Update from RAC-NJ

Fresh off our success on the Fair Chance in Housing Act, RAC-NJ is participating in the RAC's national Freedom to Vote campaign. Register to join our virtual lobby meeting with Senator Bob Menendez's office on August 4, 2021, at 3:30 pm ET. We will be advocating in support of the For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4), both of which are essential to protecting the right to vote. Local leaders are working to set the agenda and slate of speakers. Together we can demonstrate RAC-NJ's statewide commitment to voting rights.

A similar meeting with Senator Cory Booker is in the works - stay tuned for details and a registration link.

Legislative Update

Urge Your Senators to Make the Promise of Democracy Real for Us All

The right to vote is fundamental in a democracy, and we must ensure that elections are accessible for all. Urge your Senators to support legislation like The For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1) that will protect the freedom to vote by establishing national standards for federal elections and ensuring that voter registration and voting options are equally accessible across the United States.

Next Deadline
Deadline for ordering plastic gift cards: Sunday, August 15

Travels, movies, ice cream, yard work, house projects.... there is scrip for that! If you can use scrip for your summertime fun, Or Chadash also benefits. Thanks!

A reminder that if you do any shopping on Amazon, please use smile.Amazon.com to designate OC as beneficiary, and also please buy Amazon scrip to make your purchases. Double pay to Or Chadash, and no cost to you at all. If you are doing any online shopping, please consider buying scrip to make those purchases.

As far as new habits go, ordering scrip is a great one! It's easy to get started! Check out the Scrip FAQs on the Or Chadash website. We always place orders for plastic scrip cards on the 15th of the month, so it's easy to plan your orders.

Thank you for your support during the 20-21 fiscal year!

Or Chadash has been a "supporting congregation" for FamilyPromise (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network) for many years, a wonderful organization that helps homeless families in Hunterdon County as they rotate through about a dozen different Hunterdon County congregations which have accommodations. Each "host congregation" provided shelter and food for approximately 1-2 weeks, and then the family moved to the next congregation. Our role involved sending volunteers from our congregation to bring a meal and stay with the families in shifts; we have been supporting Flemington Presbyterian Church for years and in 2019, we added support to the FJCC as well.

As you can imagine, COVID threw all of this out the window. Throughout the pandemic, FamilyPromise has been hosting families in motels, and getting donations from the public for the motel stays and food. Throughout this time, they had been looking into leasing a property; that has not worked out unfortunately, and congregations are still not physically hosting families at this time. However, congregations are once again becoming involved.  At this time, the two congregations we support, Flemington Presbyterian Church and the Flemington JCC, are on a 1-2 week schedule;  rather than physically hosting, they are doing all the grocery shopping while families continue to shelter in motels.

The schedule for our congregational support in 2021 is as follows:
  • Aug 1 - Aug 8: FJCC
  • Oct 31 - Nov 14: Flemington Presbyterian Church (two weeks)
  • Dec 19 - Dec 26: FJCC
As the supporting congregation, we can donate money and/or ShopRite gift cards (Scrip!  Win-Win!) to assist in that effort.  For the upcoming support period, the FJCC will be shopping for five families on July 30-31 for the August 1-8 week;  if you are interested in contributing, please let me know by July 29th, and I will get the donations to the FJCC shoppers.  Each family has specific needs, so it has been decided that 1-2 designated shoppers from the specific congregation would be more efficient, rather than coordinating donations of actual goods.

Of course, you can donate any time! These are just the two congregations that we are partnered with, and these are the weeks they are scheduled for shopping. There is a possibility of on-site hosting for these later dates, so mark your calendar if you are interested in bringing a meal and/or staying during these dates.

Thank you!
