Dear Members of Or Chadash,

This past Saturday, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, a celebrated moral thinker and globally renowned intellect of Judaism, died at the age of 72. He was an Orthodox rabbi, and struggled with other forms of Judaism, but as the chief rabbi of the United Kingdom for more than 20 years, he was well known in both in the secular world and in Jewish circles.

Rabbi Sacks wrote extensively and created videos about the richness of Judaism, some of which we have shown at Or Chadash to our students. This Sunday, I will be sharing some of his thoughts at Kup' O Joe at 10:30 AM. In his 2002 book, The Dignity of Difference, Sacks wrote in response to the attacks on 9/11, "God has spoken to mankind in many languages: through Judaism to the Jews, Christianity to Christians, Islam to Muslims. .. God is the god of all humanity, but no single faith is or should be the faith of all humanity." His words meant to soften the rhetoric against Islam that had permeated religious dialogue following the events here in America.

His YouTube video "Why I Am A Jew" is one of my favorite videos about Judaism.

I invite you to watch it as a tribute to the memory of Rabbi Sacks. May his memory be a blessing.

 - Rabbi Joseph M. Forman

Stemming from the thesis that Jews eat by occasion (and with enthusiasm), the book is organized into 19 different events and celebrations chronicling a Jewish life in food, from bris to shivah, and all the makeshift and meaningful events in between, including: Shabbat, Passover, the high holidays, first meal home from college, J-dating, wedding, and more.

Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time,  returns in a courtroom drama that showcases #1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham at the height of his storytelling powers.

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake's fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham's most powerful courtroom drama yet.

From the scion of Hollywood royalty-son of Michael Douglas, grandson of Kirk Douglas-a moving, often shocking, ultimately inspiring memoir detailing his struggle to regain his dignity, humanity, and place in society after many years of drug abuse and almost eight years in prison.

Cameron Douglas is born into wealth, privilege, and comfort. His parents are glamorous jet-setters, his father a superstar, his mother a beautiful socialite, his grandfather a legend. On the surface, his life seems golden. But by the age of thirty, he has taken a hellish dive: he's become a drug addict, a thief, and-after a DEA drug bust-a convicted drug dealer sentenced to five years in prison, with another five years added to his sentence while incarcerated. Eventually he will spend two years in solitary, where he manages, nonetheless, to hold fast to the brutal ethos of prison survival . . . until: he begins to reverse his savage transformation, to understand the psychological turmoil that has tormented him for years, and to prepare for what will be a profoundly challenging, but eventually deeply satisfying and successful, reentry into society at large.

Sparing no one in his sphere-least of all himself-Cameron Douglas gives us a raw and unstintingly honest recounting of his harrowing, remarkable, and, in the end, inspiring life story.

In The Night Archer, the acclaimed historian, political commentator, and statesman Michael Oren is revealed as a writer of bold versatility.

By the founder of the first organization in the United States committed to freeing the wrongly imprisoned, this is a riveting story of devotion, sacrifice, and vindication. Jim McCloskey was at a midlife crossroads when he met the man who would change his life. A former management consultant, McCloskey enrolled at Princeton Theological Seminary at age 37. His first assignment, in 1980, was as a chaplain at Trenton State Prison. Among the inmates was Jorge de los Santos, a heroin addict who'd been convicted of murder years earlier and swore that he was innocent. Over time, McCloskey came to believe him. With no legal or investigative training to speak of, McCloskey threw himself into the case. Two years later, thanks to those efforts, Jorge de los Santos walked free, fully exonerated. McCloskey had found his calling. Through tireless investigation and an unflagging dedication to justice-Centurion has freed 63 innocent prisoners who had been sentenced to life or death.

When Truth Is All You Have is McCloskey's inspirational story, and as those unjustly imprisoned, a chronicle of faith and doubt, triumphant success and shattering failure, a soul-bearing account of a man who has redeemed innumerable lives-and incited a movement - with nothing more than his unshakeable belief in truth.

In this riveting medical thriller-from the Pulitzer Prize winner and best-selling author, Lawrence Wright, Dr. Henry Parsons, an unlikely but appealing hero, races to find the origins and cure of a mysterious new killer virus as it brings the world to its knees.

At an internment camp in Indonesia, forty-seven people are pronounced dead with acute hemorrhagic fever. When Henry Parsons-microbiologist, epidemiologist-travels there on behalf of the World Health Organization to investigate, what he finds will soon have staggering repercussions across the globe: an infected man is on his way to join the millions of worshippers in the annual Hajj to Mecca. Now, Henry joins forces with a Saudi prince and doctor in an attempt to quarantine the entire host of pilgrims in the holy city . . . A Russian émigré, a woman who has risen to deputy director of U.S. Homeland Security, scrambles to mount a response to what may be an act of biowarfare . . . Already-fraying global relations begin to snap, one by one, in the face of a pandemic . . . Henry's wife, Jill, and their children face diminishing odds of survival in Atlanta . . . And the disease slashes across the United States, dismantling institutions-scientific, religious, governmental-and decimating the population. As packed with suspense as it is with the fascinating history of viral diseases, Lawrence Wright has given us a full-tilt, electrifying, one-of-a-kind thriller.

Inspired the Netflix drama, The Red Sea Diving Resort!

In the early 1980s, on a remote part of the Sudanese coast, a new luxury resort opened for business. Catering to divers, it attracted guests from around the world. Little did the guests know that the staff members were undercover spies, working for the Mossad, Israel's secret service. Written by longtime BBC Middle East correspondent Raffi Berg, this page-turner tells the true story that inspired the recent Netflix drama The Red Sea Diving Resort. What began with one cryptic message pleading for help turned into the secret evacuation of thousands of Ethiopian Jews and the spiriting of them to Israel.

Raffi Berg is the Middle East editor of the BBC News website, and has extensive experience reporting on Israel and the wider region. His article scratching the surface of this story was the most-read original feature in the history of the site, with more than 5 and a half million readers to date.

A message from congregant Liz Loew...

Last September, Hunterdon Healthcare teamed up with Home Health Services andSocial Services to offer home food delivery to local residents who, for medical reasons, aren't able to travel to the Food Pantry.

The Director of the program, Chris Gorton, is looking for adult volunteers who are able to drive, but who also have the ability to spend some time getting to know their clients. The individuals (and sometimes families) that are receiving this assistance are often lonely and looking for some companionship and friendship, and in many of the relationships that have been established since the inception of this program, the client has asked the volunteer to select their food from them, often with comments of "please just pick out what you know I'll eat." It's a little bit like forming a relationship with your Instacart Shopper, but the "store" is the Food Pantry and the client is ordering not because of COVID, but because they really can't leave their home.

The clients do have the ability to order their own items, so you wouldn't necessarily be tasked with selecting someone's meals! But - it would also be more than just picking up at the Pantry and dropping off to the clients. Deliveries would be twice/month, per client you're assisting.

In the past year, Food2You has made 234 deliveries to 31 clients. There are currently 22 clients being assisted, but that is variable.

If you are interested, please reach out to Chris Gorton directly at gortonc@comcast.net and please tell her that Liz Loew from the Food Pantry referred you.

Thank you for reading, and for sharing with a friend who you believe may be interested in assisting.

Hope you're well!

 - Liz Loew
