Dear Members of Or Chadash:
80 years ago this Friday, the events that would become the Holocaust began. The details are complex, but the outcome was simple -- the rhetoric of Nazi Germany turned to violent and destructive action. A lesson not to be forgotten.
The following is from the United Stated Holocaust Memorial Museum's website:
"On the night of November 9, 1938, violent anti-Jewish demonstrations broke out across Germany, Austria, and the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia....O
ver the next 48 hours, violent mobs, spurred by antisemitic exhortations from Nazi officials, destroyed hundreds of synagogues, burning or desecrating Jewish religious artifacts along the way. Acting on orders from Gestapo headquarters, police officers and firefighters did nothing to prevent the destruction. All told, approximately 7,500 Jewish-owned businesses, homes, and schools were plundered, and 91 Jews were murdered. An additional 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps....
The Nazis came to call the event
Kristallnacht
("Crystal Night," or, "The Night of Broken Glass"), referring to the thousands of shattered windows that littered the streets afterwards..."

Humor is a powerful tool to deal with tragedy. It has been especially true for the Jewish people. Please join us this Friday at 7PM for a commemoration of Kristallnacht and the screening of
The Last Laugh, a documentary film on the Holocaust and humor
.
Shalom,
Rabbi Joseph M. Forman

IN THE COMMUNITY...
A message from Robin Wishnie, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties...
Hello Everyone,
We have slammed into the 2018 hurricane season.
When disaster first strikes, immediate aid is needed to help communities get back on their feet. Afterwards, rebuilding and strengthening resilience can take years.
But, just as with Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey, Jewish Federations are there-helping make sure that the urgent needs of the most severely impacted are met.
We have opened a fund for victims of Hurricane Michael, as we have done for previous hurricanes. Please help these hurricane victims today.
