MITTEN MITZVAH

Please join us in a Mitten Mitzvah!

It is our Or Chadash "minhag" (custom) to decorate our Sukkah with
mittens, gloves, hats and scarves (new or slightly used.)  After the
holiday of Sukkot--which celebrates the fall harvest-- we donate these
items  to clients of local organizations--such as the Food Pantry.
The mitten mitzvah  collection begins during Sukkot and extends through October 31, 2019.
Thank you in advance for your support of our mitten mitzvah.

POP-UP ANNOUNCEMENTS
Or Chadash is a community. We strive to plan different events to provide something of interest to everyone. We encourage you to be become involved either by attending an event, or even better, by helping to plan one. Here are the  upcoming synagogue events that were announced by some of our fellow congregants when they "popped up" at our Rosh Hashanah morning service:

Cooking Class - Canal House Station Restaurant, Milford, NJ

Date:
Winter 2020
Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton opened the charming Canal House Station restaurant this summer in a former train depot in Milford, NJ. Christopher and Melissa are also the authors of Cook Something, which was named one of the New York Times best Fall 2019 cookbooks. The New York Times described Hirshheimer and Hamilton as "home cooks first" and to take advantage of that we have arranged a cooking class followed by dinner at the Canal House Station restaurant.
[Pop-Up Announcer: Cindy Stoter]
Play - Fidler Afn Dakh - Yiddish Version of Fiddler on the Roof

Date:
TBD
Fidler Afn Dakh. No you are not Farblondget, (confused). We will be going to New York City to see the off Broadway version of Fidler Afn Dakh, the Yiddish language version of Fiddler on the Roof.  Complete with Traditsye (tradition), Gevalt  (a shock of fright), Bubbe Meise (grandmother's fable), Tsimmes  (a sweet carrot stew) and azoyns un azelekhes (such and such) with English Supertitles displayed on large screens flanking the stage.
[Pop-Up Announcer: Evelyn Kurtzberg]
Sisterhood Walk and Talk

Date:
Sunday, November 3rd
Time:
10:15 AM
We are walkers, doers and schmoozers.  Please consider joining Sisterhood for a casual neighborhood walk on Foothill Road, and/or meet us afterwards at OC for some talking and schmoozing.  We meet monthly on Sunday mornings.
[Pop-Up Announcer: Judi Levine]
Jewish American Literature Class

Second Class:
Date:
Saturday, November 16th

Time:
 9:30 AM
Jennifer Gilmore, author and Professor of English at Lafayette College will be leading a seminar on Jewish American Literature here at Or Chadash on four Shabbat mornings. We will be introduced to American Jewish writing, and have the opportunity to analyze the American Jewish experience and its connection to immigration, acculturation and alienation, through readings of Philip Roth, Bernard Melamud, Art Spiegelman to name a few.  We hope you will consider joining the twenty folks that are already registered for this class!
[Pop-Up Announcer: Wendy Solomon]
Brewery Hop

First Hop
Date:
Friday, November 15th
Time:
7:30 PM
Did you know that Hunterdon County will soon be host to four breweries? They are located in High Bridge, Asbury, Flemington, and coming soon, one on Rt. 22 in Lebanon. We will be "hopping" to a few of them this Fall.
The first "hop" will be a Beer Oneg at the
Lone Eagle in Flemington, NJ, following a Shabbat Experience at Or Chadash.
[Pop-Up Announcer: Glenn Wasserman]
ArtYard & Historic Frenchtown Tour

Date:
 Saturday, November 9th
Time: 1:00 PM
ArtYard is a contemporary art center founded by a group of artists, filmmakers curators and writers. Located in Frenchtown, directly behind the restaurant Lovin' Oven, Art Yard's current exhibition is getting rave reviews. Titled "Janet Ruttenberg: Beholder", the exhibit features eleven of Ruttenberg's recent ten-by-fifteen foot canvases and watercolors celebrating Central Park's famous Sheep Meadow. We will explore the exhibition and also historic Frenchtown.
[Pop-Up Announcer: Aaron Schwartz]

BEER ONEG
Brewery Hop "Beer Oneg" on November 15th

Our first Beer Oneg has been scheduled for Friday, November 15th at 7:30 PM, following a Shabbat Experience at Or Chadash.

Lone Eagle Brewing is located in beautiful, historic Flemington, NJ. We opened our doors in July 2016 as Flemington's first craft brewery. We offer over 5 thousand square feet of tasting room space that includes an 18 hundred square-foot loft overlooking the brew area and main tasting room. Children are allowed when accompanied by a parent and they sell soda and water in addition to their own craft beer.

SCRIP & FUNDRAISING

SCRIP CORNER

Scrip numbers are looking so much better!  We bumped up, way up, from 23 orders in September to 34 orders in OctoberTHANK YOU so much!

Next step is to bump up how much we are ordering. In order to reach our goal of $12,000 for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, we need to generate $1,000 in scrip earnings each month.  If we can all order $400 to $500 of scrip per month, it would do the trick!  Of course, if you can order more, that is fantastic!  Think about gas, coffee, food shopping, department stores, pharmacies, restaurants, etc.

Please remember scrip for your holiday needs! Food shopping, home readying, gift giving - there are tons of retailers who participate in the scrip program. Think of the double gift you give when your scrip purchases help OC exactly when we need it most!

NEW!  Remember the scrip proxy order option! Simply fill out the order form and send that plus a check to Or Chadash, and your order will be placed for you!  Find order forms in the OC office, or email Christine Berg. Get orders and checks in before the 15th of the month when orders are placed. Easy!

One more RAFFLE for 2019! Place orders online, or with our new paper order forms, in each of the months of October, November, and December, and be entered to win a $25 gift card!

It's never too late to get in on this fundraising gem!  Scrip is another name for gift cards, and when you sign up to buy them on the ShopWithScrip website, every purchase you make earns Or Chadash much-needed (free) funds. There are hundreds of retailers, offering varying percentages back to Or Chadash. And Or Chadash shares the benefits with you as credit on your dues. This is truly a win-win opportunity!

Here is how members of the Scrip Program are helping Or Chadash each month:

Can we count on you to place an order? Our next deadline is Friday, November 15th.

Buying scrip each month is a wonderful mitzvah you can do all year long! Check this out World Famous Example:
  • $500 of ShopRite scrip each month for a year = $240 earnings for OC
  • 50 families ordering $500 of ShopRite scrip each month for a year = adds up to $12,000 earnings for OC!!!

We can do this!
