SAT MAY 25

An evening with Johnny Rawls
(BLUES) Mississippi native Johnny Rawls got his early musical education from his grandfather, John Paul Newson, a blind guitarist who played around the Hattiesburg area. He began playing guitar at age 12, learning as much as he could from players in other area blues bands. While still a teen, Rawls had the opportunity to back legendary singers such as Joe Tex and Z.Z. Hill. After leaving Mississippi for a year when he was 17, he returned, determined to form his own blues/soul ensemble, backing up touring musicians. By the mid-'70s, Rawls joined O.V. Wright's band, working with Wright until his death in 1980. After Wright's death, the band continued to perform his music for 13 years as the O.V. Wright Band, opening shows for people like B.B. King, Little Milton Campbell and Bobby Bland. In the mid-1980s, the O.V. Wright Band also toured with Little Johnny Taylor, Latimore, B.B. Coleman, Blues Boy Willie, and others, including Lynn White.
Working with guitarist L.C. Luckett, Rawls recorded 45 rpm singles for his own label, Touch Records, and continued working around the South, touring regionally with soul-blues singers. In 1994, Rawls and Luckett recorded their first album, Can't Sleep at Night, for the Rooster Blues label. In 1995, Rawls parted with Luckett to lead a new group and found a record company that was interested, the London-based JSP label. Here We Go, his debut for JSP Records, was recorded in 1996, and since then, he's followed it with a slew of solo albums, ten in all to date. johnnyrawlsblues.com

Gypsy Wind (JAMGRASS) Like gypsies traveling on the wind, this versatile band's sound carries its listeners across borders and through time. They are often described as a musical journey from the Kentucky bluegrass of Bill Monroe to the gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt to the Cosmic American music of Gram Parsons. Working in a medium of acoustic instruments, Gypsy Wind embodies a new take on an old blend of jazz, swing, bluegrass and folk. gypsywindband.com
w/Free Range Roosters (AMERICANA) Rootsy, freewheeling Americana is the name of the game for the Free Range Roosters, a collective of blues- and bluegrass-loving musicians from around Tampa Bay. With an eclectic array of guitars, fiddles, harmonicas and mandolins, the group cites influences like Dylan, Waits and Cash. "Folk with attitude," they call it. They came together through shared musical tastes, especially through jams at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, during festivals like Suwannee Springfest and Magnolia Project.

Jimmy Thackery (BLUES/ROCK) Jimmy Thackery is one of the increasingly few blues guitarists working today who learned first hand from the masters of the blues, not off a blues record or DVD. It was Thackery's time on stage with Muddy Waters that is branded deep within his musical soul. "Muddy was one of those guys who was constantly encouraging," Thackery recalls. "He never told you what to do, but he always told you what you were doing wrong. He never minced words about that. The first time on stage with Muddy, I was in such awe of him that I just kept my eyes and ears open and just picked up on everything he did. It was the dynamics they had that became so ingrained in us. We heard it on the records and then stood on stage and saw how it worked."." Though many blues fans associate Thackery with his 15 years as the co-founder of the Nighthawks, he ended his time with them in 1987. Since then, Jimmy has been on the road as a solo musician for 15 years doing nearly 300 shows a year proving each night that he is still the guitar powerhouse in the blues. jimmythackery.com
Hadden Sayers (BLUES/ROCK) For most musicians, "the road" is a place of either hedonism or heartache. Contrasts on the far ends of a far too common clich. But for Soul-Blues Guitar Slinger Hadden Sayers, the road is a comfortable buzz of underground fans and passionate shows. It wasn't always this way and for a while, Sayers wasn't on the road. He built a successful career in Houston, Texas before relocating to the Midwest so his wife could pursue a career in cancer research. But then, shifty record companies faded away. Band members died tragically. The gigs stopped coming through and the phone stopped ringing. The '57 Strat stayed in its case. However, Sayers rediscovered his love of music on regular drives to Southern Ohio where he was rehabbing a battered cabin. The murmur of radials on concrete, the sounds of Van Morrison and Sam Cooke on the stereo, and the support and tutelage of a grizzled stonemason sent him back to the recording studio. In 2011, Sayers released the acclaimed Hard Dollar, featuring the single "Back to the Blues," which was nominated for the Song of the Year Award at the 33rd Annual Blues Music Awards. The album launched him back onto stages around the country. More than 100 gigs followed, from New York City to Mammoth Lakes, CA.
Sayers embraced the road, loved it. Savored the miles, the buses, and the airplanes. While the easy rock and roll tale is to collect panties and mugshots on the road, Sayers collected stories. Stories by everyday people who had read HIS story of healing in Southern Ohio. From the woman whose husband had passed unexpectedly taking on immense home repairs with the help of some Home Depot classes after reading the bio...to the old man in Illinois who was moved to tears as he recalled a similar period of loss in his own life. The stories resonated in Sayers' head and heart driving him to explore the "human condition" more deeply.. The result of that troubadour experience is the eagerly anticipated album Rolling Soul from Blue Corn Music. Confident tunes from a mature, assured composer, the record features Sayers at his best. Heartfelt lyrics sung from deep inside matched with innovative guitar work, recorded with the warmth and soul and depth of the best vintage gear. It's a record to contemplate and savor. To celebrate the release of the record, Sayers is doing what he does best: he's hitting the road. Hauling a refurbished 1962 Airstream trailer christened "The Rolling Soul Emporium" behind his 1961 Chevy Bubbletop Impala to select gigs, festivals, and surprise pop-up appearances around the country, the bluesman is rolling some soul into every town. Not simply a method of travel, the trailer is a mobile manifestation of Sayers' love of music and the road. Fans across the country will be able to track the Emporium's movements on Facebook, participate in contests, and hang out before and after shows.

John Nmeth (BLUES/SOUL) John Nmeth is a rising blues star; a singer steeped in the tradition and reminiscent of B.B. King, Ray Charles and Junior Parker, and a harmonica player of riveting intensity and virtuosity. His decade long career has found him opening for Robert Cray, Keb Mo', and Earl Thomas. Performing major music festivals around the United States, Europe, Canada and Asia has brought him critical acclaim. Nmeth's origins are an unlikely breeding ground for such an impressive blues talent. A thirty year old native of Boise, Idaho, he grew up singing in a Catholic church and started playing in local bands as a teenager. Nmeth was a featured artist with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets in 2005 and 2006 as well as a featured artist with The Junior Watson Band in 2002. The Cascade Blues Association selected Nmeth as a crowd favorite at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival in 2002, and the Washington Blues Society called him the show stealer at the Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival in 2003. The buzz around John Nmeth is substantial, and his Blind Pig debut, "Magic Touch," delivers the goods in spades. From the opening track, an ambitious and fully realized reworking of Junior Wells' classic "Blues Hit Big Town," John's emotive, smooth voice and stellar harp playing introduce a virtuoso of rare depth and power. John's uncanny blend of retro-modern blues and soul music will delight purists and young hipsters alike. This year, Nmeth was nominated for five Blues Music Awards (formerly known as the Handy Awards) including Entertainer of the Year, Contemporary Blues Album and Soul Blues Album of the Year. johnnemethblues.com

The result is a raucous stage show, heavy on harmonies, spitfire guitar licks, body paint, and all manner of instrumentation. Their style has been described varyingly as "grit-pop" or "dance punk", and though their songs hint at the Talking Heads, Cake, and Daft Punk, they are driven by something entirely new and infectious. BLACK TAXI's first full-length offering Things of that Nature received strong reviews in publications throughout the country. Tampa Bay area saxophonist Thor Stevens grew up in as Steve Thornton in the culturally diverse South Tampa music scene. Honing his musical chops with local jazz and blues groups while studying music at USF, Thor took to the road and eventually to Las Vegas where he played a variety of styles with such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Dionne Warwick, Wayne Newton, Vic Damone, The Coasters, Debbie Reynolds, and Jeffrey Osbourne. Thor currently plays throughout South Hillsborough and Pinellas County with such well known performers as Shawn Brown, JGLB and the Lint Rollers. Unfortunately, Thor was recently diagnosed with colon cancer but thankfully, Thor has many friends and they're banding together to help him out at this benefit concert.
JGLB (ROCK/RHYTHM 'N' BLUES) Almost any venue in the bay area that has featured live music within the last three decades has hosted the JGLB (shorthand for the Johnny G. Lyon Band) at one time or another. To wit, JGLB has performed at Raymond James Stadium, Tropicana Field, Tampa Stadium, The Times Forum, The Bayfront Center, The Sun Dome, Al Lang Field, Al Lopez Field, Tampa Theater, the State Theater, Lowry Park, Vinoy Park, Curtis Hixon Park, and countless other concert venues. JGLB has opened concerts for B. B. King, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, The Outlaws, Marshall Crenshaw, Marshall Tucker, Three Dog Night, Los Lobos, The Monkees, BTO, Gregg Allman, The Rubber City Rebels, James Harman Blues Band, and many more.
JGLB is led by 56 year old Johnny G. Lyon, a lifelong professional musician. Although Johnny was raised in the country music center of Nashville, he grew up loving rock and roll. 46 years later, Johnny G. Lyon has done a little bit of everything in the music business. In the late '70s and early '80s, Johnny's band gained notoriety in Tampa. In 1981, Johnny moved to Los Angeles, returning to Tampa in 1984. With a new band sporting the now-familiar "JGLB" moniker, Johnny found himself garnering an overwhelmingly positive reaction from large crowds in diverse venues. From biker bars to beach bars to upscale venues throughout the region, JGLB was a big hit. In 1990, JGLB released the eight-song LP, "Good Cheap Rock-N-Roll." A single, ''Call Me Lover Boy," received solid local airplay. In August 1995, JGLB released a nine-song CD, "Give The Kid A Chance." Reviews include Focus Magazine's assertion that "Kid" is "one of the most commercially accessible discs to be released locally in some time." In the surrounding hoopla, Johnny was asked to sing the National Anthem at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. Widely-regarded as one of the most outstanding vocalists and virtuoso guitarists ever to emerge from the Tampa Bay music scene, he has performed and recorded with blues legends like the late Sonny Terry, Blind Willie James, and the late Rock Bottom, punk rock icons like the Rubber City Rebels, the quirky Billy C. Wirtz, and Americana hero Ronny Elliott. Currently, the JGLB lineup includes longtime drummer Ray Blade, bassist Benny "Ben Jammin" Sudano, and vocalist Tommy Duncan. Vocalist Freight Train Annie is the most recent addition to the band, continuing a tradition of females who have been featured in JGLB. Annie has performed with legends like Buddy Miles and Big Bill Morganfield, as well as local favorites The Marys, The Fire Ants, Greenflash, and the eponymously named Freight Train Annie Band. jglb.net

Damon Fowler Group (BLUES/AMERICANA) With his hybrid of roots rock, blues, and sacred steel, Florida native Damon Fowler started wowing audiences with his musical exploits as a teenager, building a reputation as one of the hottest young players on the scene. Adding songwriting and vocal skills to his repertoire over the years has brought him many accolades, with critics extolling his originality and maturity as well as his technical guitar expertise. Creative Loafing magazine named him "Best Guitarist... And Slide Guitarist... and Lap Steel Player... And Dobro Player." Fowler's guitar work has been compared to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, while his slide guitar has a hint of the late Duane Allman. He can play fiery guitar runs with the best of them, but it's his lyrical work on lap steel and Dobro that makes him stand out among the legions of guitar heroes. Local, state and national audiences are flocking to Damon's sizzling stage shows. Described as having a 'take-no-prisoners' attitude, his trio generates powerful energy and presents a dynamic and dramatic delivery. Fans in the audience get swept up in the moment, and there's no doubt the guys on stage are having a ball performing. damonfowler.com
w/Berry Duane Oakley (ROCK) Does that name seem familiar? It should - Berry is the son of the founding bass player of the Allman Brothers Band, Berry Oakley. Growing up in Los Angeles with his step dad ,"Dad" Chuck Negron (Three Dog Night), and his mother, Julia, he clearly inherited the gift and love of music trough his extended family's vast community of creative music talent. Oakley is a vintage nut who has worked with countless musicians, artists, producers and song writers over the years. He's toured with several bands, including his godfather, Robby Krieger (of the Doors) band, "RKB" from 1991-2000. In 1992 Berry joined Bloodline. Bloodline's line-up included Berry Oakley, Waylon Krieger, Lou Segreti, Joe Bonamassa and Erin Davis (son of Miles Davis). Releasing their self-titled CD for EMI Records produced by Joe Hardy (ZZ Top, Jeff Healey) in August of 1994, Bloodline's first single, "Stone Cold Hearted" charted; 19 on Album Network's Powercuts, 21 on Radio & Records' Rock Tracks and 32 on Billboard's Rock Tracks. Bloodline toured the US extensively with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tesla, ZZ Top, Bad Company, Bob Dylan, Collective Soul, Eddie Money, Foreigner, Robby Krieger, Ian Moore, B.B. King, and more. They also appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brian, as well as many other talk shows and programs. In 1996 Berry put together OKB (Oakley Krieger Band) with Waylon Krieger, Duane Betts (son of Dickey Betts), & Alec Puro (Deadsy). OKB slammed the circuit with its heavy Southern rock guitar sound earning Berry the Rock City News award "best bass player" in 1997. In 2000, Berry joined Blue Floyd, a jam band whose goal was to take Pink Floyd's music back to its blues roots. With top artists like Marc Ford (Black Crowes), Matt Abts (Gov't Mule), Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers) & Allen Woody (Gov't Mule), and later Audley Freed (Cry of Love, Black Crowes), Jeff Pevar (Crosby Stills & Nash), & Alvin Youngblood Heart. Blue Floyd has backed such greats as Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Steve Cropper, Buddy Miles, and many others as they toured extensively through the US & Europe. When he wasn't out with Blue Floyd, Berry could be found playing in Marc Ford & the Sinners and Malibu's notorious Backbone69. (Berry appears on Marc Ford's solo debut record "It's About Time.") Since 2004 he's been playing in another notorious Malibu band 27Miles (formally 454.) Berry appears on there debut record "Bringin It Back". An evening with
Eric Sardinas (BLUES/ROCK) Slide guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Sardinas has a reputation for packing intensity into his live performances. Since the late-90s' Sardinas has taken the stage thousands of times across the globe, with audiences growing exponentially each passing year. His six albums have displayed a distinct style that musically pushes the boundaries of rock and blues, and the world has taken notice. A Florida-born Sardinas picked up a guitar at age six. He was inspired by the energy of roots music from his mom's soul, Motown, gospel, and early rock n' roll collection. From his elder brother, classic rock was always being played. His instrument of choice is his signature electrified resonator guitar. Sardinas modernized an instrument made famous by traditional Blues artists in electrifying the instrument, and expanding the usual spectrum of what these guitars historically deliver musically. Now Sardinas has put his onstage lighting in a bottle for the new album Sticks & Stones, an 11-song powerhouse of his trademark slide guitar that is a vehicle to drive his inspiration from the roadhouse in to mainstream music. Steve Arvey
(BLUES) Early exposure to the music of great country bluesmen like Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and Leadbelly made a lasting impression on a young Steve Arvey. The three decades since have seen Arvey performing all over Europe, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand while being lauded by some of the toughest critics in the roots music genre. A stint while living in Gainesville backing Bo Diddley was a watershed experience and when a resident of Chicago, he worked as a sideman playing bass guitar, guitar, and drums behind such blues luminaries as Hubert Sumlin, Jimmy Rogers, Homesick James, Carey Bell, Big Jack Johnson, Sam Carr, Frank Frost, Eddie Taylor, Eddie Clearwater, Sugar Blue, Abb Locke, Hip Linkchain and Junior Wells.  SteveArvey.com

The Delta Swamp Rats (BLUES) Headliner Steve Arvey launched this new project in 2012 to recreate the Juke Joint sounds of  the Mississippi Delta from the '40s and the '50s while adding the funk and soul grooves of the '60s. The band is a regular at The House Of Blues in Orlando. thedeltaswamprats.fourfour.com
