County Executive Marc Elrich this week relates some good news in the battle against COVID-19: the recently approved vaccines for children 6 months to 5 years old will quickly be available in limited quantities in Montgomery County. He also talks about the report that finds the Washington-Baltimore Region is second in the nation for attracting talented life sciences workers. He reminds eligible renters that the deadline for applying for rental relief assistance is Thursday, June 30. The County Executive encourages residents to join him in Downtown Silver Spring on Sunday for the ‘Pride in the Plaza’ special event. And he offers thoughts on former Board of Education member Reggie Felton, who passed away recently. Read More

County to Host Fireworks Shows in Kensington on Saturday, July 2, and in Germantown on Monday, July 4
Montgomery County will host two Independence Day fireworks displays and family gatherings this year, one on in Kensington on Saturday, July 2, and the other on Monday, July 4, in Germantown. Read More

Master Gardener Plant Clinic

Bring your gardening questions, plant materials or mystery insect to one of the Plant Clinics staffed by Montgomery County Master Gardeners, held on Wednesdays between April 27 through the end of September in the lobby on the first floor of the Germantown library. These volunteers have had training in soil and plant science, tree and shrub identification, integrated pest management, plant diseases and insect pests.

Tickets to Montgomery County Recreation’s seven outdoor pools this year are available online for pre-purchase. Tickets for the holiday on Monday, July 4, are now available. Tickets are available at a discounted rate of $5 per person.
Online tickets will be available for purchase through midnight on Friday, July 1. Regular gate admission will be available at full cost on Monday, July 4. Read More.

***TRAFFIC ALERT*** MDOT SHA BEGINS RESURFACING SECTION OF I-270 SOUTH OF MD 109 IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Project Along One-Mile Section Will Improve Traffic Flow and Riding Surface
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a project tonight, Wednesday, June 15, to resurface one mile of southbound I-270 (Eisenhower Highway) between MD 121 (Clarksburg Road) and MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) in Montgomery County. Work will continue 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings through mid-July. Read More.

Germantown Community Recreation Center to Close this Summer for Roof Replacement
The Germantown Community Recreation Center, located at 18905 Kingsview Road will close this summer for a roofing project. The Center will close on Wednesday, June 22 and is scheduled to reopen Thursday, Aug. 18.
All programming scheduled to take place at the Center throughout the closure will take place at alternate locations, with the exception of early voting. The Center will remain open as an Early Voting location from July 7 – 14.

Poolesville High School Robotics Team (Practicing at MC) Places Second at World Championships.
Using the robotics lab in the Dr. DeRionne Pollard Student Affairs and Science building on the Germantown Campus to practice, the First Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 4099 f rom Poolesville High School won local competitions, placed high in the Chesapeake Region Championships, and qualified by merit to compete in the World Championship taking place in Houston, Texas, where 400 teams from around the world assembled for competition.
Team 4099 was in an alliance with teams from California and Israel, and together they took first place in their division (out of 70 teams). In the next round they placed against other divisions winners and advanced to the Einstein Finals, where the first and second place alliances faced off for the title of World Champion. They placed second overall. Team 4099 was the first Maryland team to make it to the finals, and is one of the 260 teams out of 9,000+ to ever compete in the Einstein Finals. Their presence at the World Championships was also a celebrated first. What an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations, FRC Team 4099. You have set an extremely high bar!

County Offer COVID-19 Vaccines to Children Ages 6 Months to 5 Years, But Initial Supplies Will Be Limited
Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 5 years, Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has started vaccinating this age group as vaccines are available. COVID-19 Cases Rising Again, So County Recommends Precautionary Measures to Protect Against Greater Community Spread of Virus
The number of COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County and the Washington Region is rising again, leading County officials to offer precautionary recommendations to prevent further community spread of the virus. The increase in transmission, both within the County and in other jurisdictions around the region, has outpaced the rise in other parts of Maryland. Read More

Masks Now Optional on County Ride On Buses
Passengers using Montgomery County’s Ride On buses are no longer required to wear a mask, but are strongly encouraged to voluntarily wear them. The change to the County’s masking policy comes after the announcement on April 18 that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has suspended enforcement of a mask mandate on all modes of public transportation. TSA’s decision came after a Federal judge’s ruling that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s mask mandate was unconstitutional. Read More

Fourth Phase of COVID-19 Rent Relief Program Will Soon Be in Place, with Applications Available Starting Monday, May 16
Eligible Montgomery County renters can soon apply for additional COVID-19 rent relief through the fourth phase of the County’s Rent Relief program, which provides financial assistance for tenants that have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Administered by the County’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the program will accept applications starting on Monday, May 16, through June 30. Read More

Second COVID-19 Booster Shots Now Available at County-Operated Clinics
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have approved giving a second booster dose of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for certain groups. Montgomery County-operated clinics are now providing the second booster dose to eligible residents.

Applications for Hotel Relief Grants to Open on Friday, July 1
A new Hotel Relief Grant Program is set to launch on Friday, July 1, for Montgomery County hotels with 10 or more rooms and Bed and Breakfasts with five or more rooms. The ownership of these facilities must be based in Maryland and be able to demonstrate a loss of revenue of 25 percent or more from September 2021 through January 2022 compared to September 2019 through January 2020. Up to $500 per room in Hotel Relief Grant money is available. Applications, when available, can be found online at the Montgomery County Business Portal. Applications will be accepted through July 22. The business portal will include program details, including eligibility requirements and frequently asked questions. Read More.

‘Grandreaders’ Program Pairing Seniors Reading to Young Students Will Be Available this Summer Through Montgomery County Public Libraries and Partners
Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL), in partnership with the Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA), Heyman Interages Center, will be offering the “Grandreaders” Program at several branches this summer. The one-on-one program pairs a Grandreader volunteer with a child from kindergarten to third grade to practice reading aloud. The Grandreaders Program will run for five weeks, from the last week of June until the end of July, at the Aspen Hill, Gaithersburg, Wheaton and White Oak libraries. Read More.

County Launches First-Ever LGBTQ+ Community Survey for ‘Pride Month’
Montgomery County is continuing its celebration of June as “Pride Month” with the release of its first-ever survey of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ+) residents. The survey will collect anonymous information about health and wellness, access to resources and services, experiences of discrimination and other aspects of residents’ life in the community. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, July 15. The survey can be found on the Office of Community Partnerships website. Read More.

MCPS Middle Students Can Now Register for Fourth Year of Free ‘Montgomery Can Code Camp,’ which Kicks Off on July 11
Registration is now open for Montgomery County Public Schools middle school students interested in attending the fourth year of the unique and innovative “Montgomery Can Code Camp” this summer. The free virtual program is a public-private partnership formed by Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation with Apple. It will offer an enriching and educational summer camp experience to learn computer coding. Read More

Montgomery County "Streeteries" to Stay Open Through Labor Day
Montgomery County's “Streeteries” program will be extended through at least Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Originally implemented to combat COVID-19, these restaurant outdoor dining areas reside on streets closed to vehicular traffic.
County Streeteries can be located in the downtown area of Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Wheaton.
Have you been to one of our Streetery locations? Residents and visitors of the Streeteries can weigh in on the pedestrian-friendly program by calling 311 and asking to be connected to the Regional Service Office for their area.

Minimum Wage in County Will Increase on July 1 to $15.65 for Large Employers
The minimum wage will again increase in Montgomery County on July 1. Sponsored by then-County Councilmember, and now County Executive, Marc Elrich, the legislation concerning increases in the County minimum wage was signed on Nov. 17, 2017. Bill 28-17 raises the minimum wage incrementally each July 1. Read More

Election Workers Needed for 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election
The Montgomery County Board of Elections is seeking registered voters to serve as election poll workers at polling places for the Gubernatorial Primary Election to be held on Tuesday, July 19. Due to the diversity within the County, voters who speak multiple languages also are needed. Read More
