Here we are again at the start of another 2-year legislative session and we need your support! This year we are sponsoring three bills and will be actively lobbying in support (or opposing, if necessary) several more.
As always, your support in the form of letters, calls, and social media engagement is key to passing laws that save animals' lives.

AB 332 (Lee), the Shelter Animal Data Collection Act: this bill would require the Department of Public Health to collect in-take and outcome data, including vaccination, adoption, and euthanasia figures from the municipal animal shelters.
AB 829 (Waldron), the Animal Cruelty & Violence Intervention Act: this bill would expand the list of animal abuse laws which require mandated counseling when violated. **Note: the current bill language in the link will be amended to reflect the legislation after March 16th.
Audit Request Re: the California Deforestation-free Procurement Act (Kalra). SCIL will be working with Assemblymember Kalra to request an audit through the Joint Committee on Legislative Audit (JLAC) to calculate how much of our state's procurement contain products harvested from tropical forests. This will help quantify the impact California's procurement has on tropical deforestation. **This is not a bill, but rather a request for audit.

AB 57 (Kalra), a bill to create "pocket forests" in urban settings.
AB 240 (Kalra), a bill to help fund free or low-cost spay and neuter services through a fee on pet food manufacturers.
AB 357 (Maienschein), a bill to require manufacturers to report various animal testing activities to the Attorney General.
AB 554 (Gabriel), a bill to clarify that an organization may bring a civil action to obtain specific or preventive relief to enforce laws relating to or affecting animals.
AB 595 (Essayli), a bill to require shelters to put all dogs and cats on a "redlist" on their website for at least 72 hours before euthanizing the animal.
AB 742 (Jackson), a bill will prohibit the use of police canines for arrest, apprehension, or any form of crowd control. The bill will not prevent the use of police canines for
search and rescue, explosives detection, and narcotics
detection.
AB 781 (Maienschein), a bill to require counties, on or before July 1, 2024, to update their emergency plan to designate emergency shelters able to accommodate persons with pets.
AB 1215 (Carrillo), a bill to create a grant program for the provision of shelter, food, and veterinary services for pets owned by people experiencing homelessness or escaping domestic violence.
AB 1232 (Connolly), a bill to establish a grant program to support the implementation of higher standards of care for farm animals and more climate-smart farming practices.
AB 1237 (Petrie-Norris), a bill to establish the California Public Interest Veterinary Debt Relief Program, which will give student loan debt relief to veterinarians who work at shelters or other qualifying locations for a specified period of time.
AB 1628 (McKinnor), a bill requiring all new washing machines sold for residential, commercial, and state use contain a microfiber filtration system to protect marine life.
SB 89 (Ochoa Bogh), a bill which will make a person guilty of stalking if the person engages in conduct that either places another person in reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury to themselves, a close family member, or a pet, service animal, emotional support animal, or horse that belongs to that person.
SB 371 (Ochoa Bogh), a bill to authorize a nonprofit to contract with a county to adopt undomesticated burros.
