Saline County, along with many other counties across Kansas, is under a Blizzard Warning. Governor Laura Kelly has verbally issued a disaster proclamation for all counties in the state. Confidence remains high in dangerous snow, ice, and wind impacts from tonight through Sunday, making travel hazardous and power outages possible.
Periods of freezing drizzle are expected to continue through early evening, leading to very slick roads. Late this evening, precipitation is expected to transition to freezing rain and sleet, with ice accumulations of up to 0.4 inches, particularly along the Highway 50 corridor. Strong north winds will develop overnight, gusting up to 50 mph, significantly reducing visibility and creating blizzard conditions.
During the early morning hours, freezing rain and sleet will transition to heavy snow, continuing through midday. Snow accumulations of 12 to 18 inches are expected, with the highest totals along and north of Interstate 70. Combined with high winds, this will lead to blowing and drifting snow, making travel extremely difficult or impossible. Additional power outages are likely due to ice and wind.
Wind chills will fall to -5°F on Sunday and could reach as low as -15°F by Monday morning, making outdoor exposure dangerous.
