Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week

Next week is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Week. MS is an auto-immune disease of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Your immune system normally protects you by fighting off infection, but with MS the immune system turns on itself and attacks the nerve cells, which control lots of different parts of your body. Everyone’s MS is different. Find out more about the signs and symptoms of MS here.

Around 130,000 people in the UK or one in every 500 are affected by MS. It is commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 40. There is currently no cure. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments and specialists can help you to manage the condition and its symptoms.

Whether you have been diagnosed with MS yourself or are a carer for someone who has, information, advice and support is available.

Every household is required by law to complete the census and even though Census Day – 21 March 2021 – has been and gone, it is not too late to complete a questionnaire. We have had a great response to Census 2021 so far, but everyone needs to respond as soon as possible to avoid a fine.
