FINDING JOY IN THE SIMPLE THINGS...
The following story is a glimpse into the life of one our Truth Home survivors told by Marina Meyers, an intern at the Truth Home pursuing her master's in social work at Kutztown University.

Finding joy in the simple things in life is what most of us strive to do. For others, it's difficult, and they often find themselves focusing on other things to bring them happiness. Our Truth Home resident "AK", presented a Slinky to me, explaining she had just received it as a gift just earlier in the day. I was so quick to reminisce back to the days where I would throw the Slinky down the steps until it hit the bottom. This was her first time playing with one. I realized this was her first time playing with a childhood toy. Something so silly when I was a child, but something so meaningful now that I am having this experience with her. After showing her what to do, she got the hang of it and you could see her face light up with happiness. She loved the idea of how the Slinky would expand to throw itself down the stairs, to only end up in the same compact position it started in. AK taught me at that moment that sometimes the silliest or simplest things can truly make an impact on someone's life. In this case, she found pure joy in an object that costs $1.99.
Sylvester Stallone once said, “I’ve kind of fashioned my life after a Slinky. Bend me in a million different shapes, and eventually I’ll spring back to what I originally was.” In AK’s case, she has had a hard battle and is continuing to fight through it. But no matter what, she is still the same loving, kind, sweet soul that The Truth Home loves and is so grateful to have. No matter what she has gone through, we can always count on her to stay true to herself.

EXPRESSING LOVE FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS!
Valentine's Day is in just a few weeks. We have ordered new jewelry and it is now available for purchase.
A note from Michelle Orr, VP of My Sister's Closet:
"We would not be able to exist if it wasn't for our amazing volunteers at My Sister's Closet! In 2020, we had 40 volunteers and those 40 volunteers gave 2,091 hours of their time. This doesn't count the volunteers who take items home to mend and sometimes launder. They are selfless, generous, helpful, thoughtful, valuable, patient, kind, and very giving. Thank you! Our CEO, Carol Andersen, said it perfectly...'they are true heroes for the courageous women survivors Truth For Women serves'."
