Epiphany, Los Angeles, celebrates building's centennial
Epiphany 1/6/13
Above: Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno, parishioners, clergy and friends of the Church of the Epiphany gathered at the historic church Jan. 6 to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The church building, completed in 1913 and incorporating the original 1880s structure, is a longtime center for Latino ministry in the Diocese of Los Angeles and activism in the local community. In 2010 it became the home and ministry center for an Episcopal order of Franciscan monks led by the Rev. Tom Carey, who is also vicar of Epiphany's congregation. Below: Canon Lydia Lopez, with filmmaker Moctesuma Esparza, delivers a brief history of Epiphany, its distinguished clergy and lay leadership, and its importance to the Chicano movement of the 1960s and 70s, in which they were active participants. Lopez and Esparza both have been associated with Epiphany for nearly 50 years. Photos/Janet Kawamoto

Bishop Mary Glasspool reports from Cuernavaca pilgrimage
Cuernavaca pilgrimage group
Eleven pilgrims left Los Angeles on Jan. 5 to fly to Mexico City and then travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico, to begin a two-week course in intensive Spanish language and also to learn about Mexican religious culture. The pilgrims have made a trip to Tepotzlan, an incredibly mystical town outside  Cuernavaca where many faiths find a home, and are intensely studying Spanish through the perspective of Mexicans in Cuernavaca. Above: Six of the pilgrims -- from left, Jill Murch, Barbara Stewart, Kate Lewis, Ricardo Reznichek, Dina Ferguson, Pat Hendrickson -- work in a late-night study group work to improve their Spanish language skills. Perhaps more important than the building of skills is the building of relationships. The newly elected bishop of Cuernavaca, the Rev. Enrique Cruz, will be consecrated on Feb. 23 at the cathedral in Cuernavaca. Our prayers are for and with him, as he begins this new ministry.
