Update On Single Stair Reform

UPDATE ON SINGLE STAIR REFORM – Council File: 25-0247

On Wednesday, August 20th, Los Angeles City Council voted 13 to 2 to instruct LADBS, LAFD, and LACP to collaborate on a draft ordinance to allow for single-stair buildings up to six stories tall.

Councilmember Jurado was absent during the vote, and Councilmember Park opposed the initiative, citing safety concerns, according to the recent article in LAist. Perhaps Councilmember Park didn’t read the report from the Pew Trust = “Small Single-Stairway Apartment Buildings Have Strong Safety Record”.

First: chronically underutilized 5‑foot side yards are dangerous, acting like kindling as radiant heat leaps from house to house in a chain reaction. Second: moist soil and healthy, hydrated vegetation are not hazards—they’re among the best defenses a home can have.
