Can you believe we are rapidly approaching the end of the school year? Filled with so many precious memories, the months have quickly passed and summer is just ahead of us.

While for many, summer brings the excitement of fewer schedules and organic trips with friends and family, the school utilizes this time at the end of one school year to make enhancements and fully prepare for families and children in the coming year!

One of our highest priorities this summer is also easily claimed as the favorite part of any child's day: the playground! Did you know we have big plans to relocate the playground our youngest students use at Christ Church Preschool, which has been lovingly dedicated to Debra Bird as the Little Bird Playground?

The prominent structure on the Little Bird Playground utilizes a spacious footprint to allow children to actively play while exploring layers ripe with potential opportunities to stimulate their language, cognitive, creative, and physical skills through social play. Playable from all sides, this signature piece features a gently sloping ramp or the option of low, broad stairs to gain initial entry into endless imaginiative scenarios, where children can peek through observation domes, balance across the walking bridge, and - of course - feel the thrill of gliding down the molded slide (specific for toddler-sized students!).

The inclusion of the friendliest animal on the savanna provides a rich play experience, where children can
  • enhance their large muscles while climbing the rope structure, planning their next move while engaging cross-coordination movements (a skill pre-requisite to reading!)
  • socially play and enlist their imagination, whether they are atop the broad platform or under it, where there are varied entry points that evoke mathematical and logical thinking in our youngest children, where their curiosity will help them determine if they can fit through the openings of various shapes and more
  • increase their fundamental motor skills, examining the many tactile details as they navigate the giraffe's play area

When they're ready for a quieter moment, chldren can enjoy the soothing sway provided by the miniature hammocks on the Little Bird Playground. Situated about 18" off the ground, the hammocks attract all children regardless of their motor skills, allowing students to take part in a lying position and providing intrinsic feedback to their little bodies, helping them begin to learn the cause and effect relationship of their bodies in space. Did you know that the pressure from the solid surface of the hammock on your child's body also promotes relaxation?

Offering another response to children's movements, the 4 seat springer is made just for toddlers! The social and physical potential of this playful piece enhance the skills being applied during play, such as strength, balance, and cooperation.

The Little Bird Playground will also have other favorite items installed, including a spacious sandbox to dig, scoop, sift, and pour; rideable toys to push, walk, or sit for a trip around the play space; and other premium toys to enhance each child's time outside daily.

To complete the space, artificial turf is being installed, complete with a drainage system to bolster the permeability of the product in our rain-filled seasons. The same sturdy metal fencing that currently surrounds the bigger playground at Christ Church Preschool will also encompass the Little Bird Playground, complementing the two outdoor play spaces as they will be adjacent to one another.
After the surprise announcement of this new place space being named in honor of Debra Bird's more than 30 years of love and dedication to Christ Church Preschool, we are looking to break ground on this new playground beginning this summer and need your support to achieve this timeline.

Thanks to the generous donations of several families and others in our community, we have been able to raise an initial 25% of the estimated $200,000 need to cover:
  • initial site work to prepare the space between the existing sidewalk and dividing island in surface lot drive
  • artificial turf and drainage system
  • fencing with gate security synced with our current safety system
  • freight and installation of new equipment
  • permitting for the relocation of the outdoor playground space
  • purchase of supplemental play items
