Over 300 landmarks worldwide participated in AFA's Light The World in Teal program on November 8th and helped make a difference by "going teal" to raise Alzheimer's awareness. The annual initiative, held in November as part of Alzheimer's Awareness Month, aims to shine a spotlight on Alzheimer's disease and show support for the millions of people affected by it. This was the fifth year landmarks around the world participated in the campaign.

Teens Invited to Enter AFA's Scholarship Essay Contest!
AFA's annual Teens for Alzheimer's Awareness Scholarship Essay Contest is now underway! High school seniors who will be entering college next year are invited to submit an essay (1,500 words maximum) about how Alzheimer's impacted their lives. The grand-prize is $5,000, with additional prizes awarded for runners-up.

If you know a high school senior who will be attending college next year, please invite them to enter the contest! The deadline to submit an essay is February 15, 2019.
Member Spotlight
Based in Austin, Texas, AGE of Central Texas offers a variety of services for older adults and caregivers to help make aging a positive and triumphant journey for everyone. Services and resources offered include an adult day health care, early memory loss support, health equipment lending, peer based computer classes for seniors through the AGE Computer Lab and free evidence-based, year-round courses for non-professional family caregivers across four counties through the collaborative program CaregiverU.

"AGE is on a mission to tackle the challenges of aging with expert solutions. We believe in the value of community and connection, and know that living with dementia as a caregiver or a patient can be a very isolating experience," said Annette Juba, Deputy Director of AGE of Central Texas. "As an agency offering six different services, we empower caregivers with helpful information and create engaging and meaningful experiences for persons living with dementia. It is incredibly humbling and rewarding to hear from clients that we have been a lifesaver to them!"

The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease can be difficult to explain or identify. NJ.com highlighted AFA and Medicine X's educational collaboration, Alzheimer's Xplained , an innovative digital storybook that seeks to demystify the disease by walking readers through the experiences of a family living with it. Alzheimer's Xplained is based on the real-life story of actor Esai Morales and his mother, who is living with Alzheimer's. It reflects their experiences and advice to others.
