Dear Friend,

I had a full-circle moment in Protivin last week! When I first came to Congress, Protivin’s volunteer firefighters were working out of a station so cramped, fitting their emergency vehicles inside was like a game of Tetris.

I worked alongside the volunteer firefighters to secure the funding to expand it — and I recently came back to tour the upgraded station.

After our tour, I sat down with volunteer firefighters, county sheriffs, EMS personnel, and first responders to talk about how we can make their jobs easier and ensure all rural Iowans have access to public safety services.

I was also proud to secure $1.3 million and work with Howard County Sheriff Rick Busch to replace outdated radio equipment so law enforcement, EMS, and fire departments can reliably communicate and respond faster when Iowans need help.

Sheriff Busch said something that really stuck with me: “We can finally, after 25 years post 9/11, talk to each other.”

Think about that.

For decades, our law enforcement officers and first responders have been expected to protect our communities without the basic communication tools they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. That's unacceptable, and it's exactly why securing this funding was so important.

I’m so thankful to our first responders for keeping Iowans safe, and I will always fight and deliver for our rural communities.

Sincerely,

ICYMI: My New Bill Strengthening Access to Birth Control Close to Home

As a mom raising two teenage boys, I’m on the other side of those early years of starting a family. But I continue to hear from Iowa women about the barriers they face accessing the care that works for them.

And one of those barriers is accessing safe birth control methods that work best for women and their families, regardless of their zip code. I’ve long believed adult women should be able to access safe, FDA-approved contraception over the counter, and I’ve led that effort in Congress.

Community health centers are often the front door to healthcare in rural Iowa. That’s why I introduced legislation to help more women access safe contraception options at their local CHC. Read more here.

Team Hinson in IA-02

Each year, hundreds of veterans and community partners gather at the Five Seasons Stand Down in Cedar Rapids to connect veterans with services designed to help improve their lives. My team set up a table at this year’s 20th anniversary to offer casework assistance and connect with veterans about how we can help.

My team enjoyed seeing the newly completed hangar and terminal at Decorah Municipal Airport and checking out the ongoing runway paving improvements at Waterloo Regional Airport.

These upgrades will help support local businesses, strengthen our communities, and keep Iowa connected to new opportunities!

Seven generations of family farming is something worth celebrating! Team Hinson stopped by Bloomsbury Farm in Atkins for the opening of their fall corn maze, which honors the generations of hard work, dedication, and family tradition that have kept this farm going strong.
