D ear Friends,

As Council Chair this year, I worked closely with our Council Media team to launch a new communications tool to provide residents a weekly snapshot of what's going on with the Council. To the left is a photo of a portion of last Friday's update. If you'd like to receive last week's edition, please send an email to CouncilDistrict3@co.pg.md.us and I'll forward you a copy. If you'd like to receive future updates, sign up here

Just last week my staff and I worked closely with a senior in District 3 who was in jeopardy of losing her home to tax sale. We were able to intervene. She will now be able to stay in her home and will pay barely any property taxes in the future due to her eligibility for the Maryland Homeowners' Property Tax Credit program.

Please take a moment to learn more about this program and see if you or your parents quality. To receive it, a homeowner must apply every year and meet certain income requirements. Special thanks to Wanda Brooks in my office who went above-and-beyond, personally delivering the paperwork for this resident to ensure she can stay in her home!

As we see new employers and economic development come to District 3 and Prince George's County, I'm committed to ensuring that our unemployed and underemployed residents are prepared for and knowledgeable about job opportunities. This email newsletter features several educational and workforce development initiatives in District 3 and across the County. Please share this information with your friends and neighbors!

Youth@Work/Summer Youth Enrichment Program - The County Council invested in this program to prepare our youth for jobs and careers and to employ youth during the summer. Applications are now open for the six-week, entry-level positions, at job sites across the County. The positions pay $9.80/hr for 15-17 year olds and $11.50/hr. for 18-19 year olds. Apply online. I've been proud to employ District 3 youth through this program in my office for the past three summers, including Suleiman and Tobi pictured here.

District 3 Workforce Development Initiative - In Summer 2016 I initiated a workforce development conversation to pull together leaders from private and public sectors to discuss needs and opportunities across D3. The group meets several times through the year.

Prince George's Promise - I was proud to serve on the Prince George's County Promise Scholarship Task Force last year. In the Fiscal Year 2018 budget, the County invested $1.7 million to create the Prince George's Promise Scholarship Program. This program covers tuition and fees not covered by State, Federal or private aid for PGCPS graduates attending Prince George's Community College. Learn more.

Greater Riverdale Career Empowerment Center - The Central Kenilworth Avenue Revitalization CDC opened the GRCEC in May 2017. They are preparing to open a culinary arts training center on Sarvis Avenue in Riverdale in partnership with Prince George's Community College. Learn more
UMD Academic Achievement Programs - UMD AAP offers several programs to assist high school students and also adults 19+ to achieve educational goals. Their Educational Opportunity Center assists low-income and first generation adults with admissions and financial aid counseling. Learn more
CreativeWorks - Joe's Movement Emporium sponsors this vocational training program in theater production and digital media, which prepares youth and young adults to secure employment and prepare for higher education. Participation is free and participants can earn stipends. Learn more.

Parkdale High School College & Career Fair - Since being elected, I have worked closely with the principal and staff at Parkdale High School. For the past three years my office has partnered with the school to host a fall College & Career Fair, which is open to all high school students in the County. Watch for the details of the 2018 event this summer.

Ready for Work - In December 2017, the County Council announced a $250,000 commitment to this partnership with Venture Philanthropy Partners to build capacity and strengthen County nonprofits to better serve youth across the County. Through a competitive process, four County nonprofits were selected for the initiative: First Generation College Bound, The Foundation of the Advancement of Music and Education (FAME), Joe's Movement Emporium, and End-Time Harvest Ministries. These nonprofits will also receive support needed to become stronger organizations.
Prince George's Community College Culinary Arts Center - Prince George's County is fully funding the construction of a new 21,561 square foot state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Center at Prince George's Community College. The new facility features several professional instruction facility, dining and serving areas, a production kitchen, culinary lab, bakery, classrooms, and faculty offices. It was a pleasure to attend a preview tour of the facility in January. The Center will open in April 2018!
