Uber's Economic Impacts Across the United States
EDR Group  measured the full economic impact of Uber across the U.S., the first study of its kind to examine the economic impact of transportation network companies (TNCs), also called "ride hailing" or "ride sharing."  EDR Group developed a series of reports covering the economic impacts for the nation, three states, and four metropolitan markets. Read More
Battery Recycling
Rechargeable lead batteries are used for power storage in motor vehicles, in communications equipment and in solar panels.  In a study for the Battery Council International, EDR Group examined the economic impact of the process whereby they are manufactured, recycled and remanufactured, creating jobs in the U.S.    Read More
Road Usage Charge Studies
For the Western Road Usage
Charge Consortium (RUC West), EDR Group developed the data, research and analysis necessary to assess the financial impacts of moving from a fuel-based tax to a mileage-based fee system. The project included identifying fuel consumption and vehicle types in use by urban and rural households, and determining the mileage driven for all households in each setting. In a second project for RUC West, EDR Group investigated additional dimensions of the RUC rate structure.   Read More
Spatial Analysis for Bus Planning in London
Cecilia Viggiano of EDR Group developed a framework for the use of origin-destination travel data in bus network sketch planning, including (1) a methodology for defining transportation analysis zones that reflect the spatial characteristics of a public transport network, (2) metrics for evaluating service and identifying gaps, and (3) spatial analysis methods to group origin-destination pairs into corridors recommended for new service. FEATURED NEW PROJECTS
Future Mobility Research EDR Group and WSP are developing a comprehensive plan and research agenda for the Strategic Mobility Research Program (SMRP) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB).  We will lead the development of a synthesis and distillation of past mobility research and analysis from around the world to help inform the SMRP research agenda.
Access in Appalachia.  For the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), EDR Group is defining and testing new approaches to measure and evaluate accessibility needs and conditions within Appalachia. The concept of isolation for many Appalachian communities - a lack of access to opportunities - was a foundational aspect of ARC. This new research will update ARC's understanding of access and why it matters to the region's economic development, and help provide a platform for future investment decision-making, spanning both transportation and non-transportation solutions.
Impacts & Costs of Connected & Automated Vehicles.   EDR Group is leading a team conducting a study for USDOT to calculate the infrastructure, vehicle, and user costs of different deployment scenarios for connected and autonomous vehicles. The scenarios include a slow roll of moderate technology development, the deployment of niche applications, managed lanes for AVs, "Ultimate Travel Assist" communication systems, competing fleets of autonomous on-demand services, and an integrated mobility future.

Resilience and Social Equity
By Stephen Fitzroy, Leader of EDRG's highway and multi-modal transportation planning
Resilience has emerged as a significant consideration in developing long-term transportation plans in response to US DOT's Climate Change and Resiliency initiatives.  The focus has been on hardening existing and planned infrastructure and assessing risks and recovery for key elements of the transportation system.  These efforts have focused on facility and human vulnerabilities, and on operational recovery.  However, as we have seen repeatedly, identifying "vulnerability" and assessing resilience and recovery for populations often ignores the unique needs, resource deficits and challenges faced by low-income and minority populations.    Read More
Community Choice Aggregation: Moving from Just Cheaper Electricity to Greener Electricity
By Michael Sherman, Principal Consultant, Clean Energy Policy
In 2018, communities in six states are leveraging their buying power for electric supply through Community Choice Aggregations (CCAs). What's new in this 20 year phenomenon is electric supply bids increasingly include renewable components at the same or lower rates than utility basic service rates.   EDR Group is working in community aggregations from Massachusetts to California.  We are currently reviewing the Clean Energy programs operated by Massachusetts' Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), including their work in fostering CCAs.     Read More
On-Demand Ride Services: A Compelling Case for Research
By Scott Middleton, Planning and Research Analyst
We at EDR Group are involved in an exciting set of research projects pertaining to On-Demand ride services. In July, EDR Group released  a new report  that measured the economic impact of Uber at national, state, and metropolitan scales. Although much smaller in scale, my own master's thesis at MIT also contributed to the important effort of understanding TNCs and their impacts. EDR Group continues to work on this topic through FHWA's Shared Mobility Incentives and Options study, which will help understand why different groups of travelers choose private or solo TNC trips.  Read More
Brand New National Travel Behavior Data
By Kyle Schroeckenthaler, Planning and Policy Analyst
In August, I had the opportunity to attend the  2018 National Household Travel Survey Workshop (NHTS)  in Washington, DC. I presented a poster called  Evaluating Alternative Transportation Revenue Regimes Using the NHTS Transferability Statistics , based on work EDR Group has done for the  Western Road User Charge Consortium  (RUC West). This NHTS data product from the 2009 survey allows us to estimate the travel behavior of households at a census tract scale across the U.S. To date we've examined 10 states to understand how revenue-neutral conversion from a gasoline excise tax to a road usage charge would affect different groups of households.   Read More
