Issue #26| April 2020
Hello Changemakers - from all of us here at United Way Youth Venture!

We hope you are all staying safe and healthy! We miss you and look forward to seeing you soon.

Our very own Jake VanHillo is hosting " Changemaker Check In " videos to share how he is spending this time and how he is making a difference, and he is looking to hear what all of you are doing during this time. Click here for the UWYV Youtube Channel to view his video series! You can also find his videos on our social media platforms. We would love to see your comments there!

Kristi Maloney has been hard at work capturing and writing stories about our Changemakers, Venture Teams, and interviewing Champions for our blog. You'll see snippets from some of those posts below with links to the full articles. You can also access the Venturer Voice Blog, here !

We are still all trying to stay connected as much as possible. Thank goodness for Zoom! We are having weekly staff meetings, meetings with our Changemakers and Portrait of a Graduate team, as well.

Be sure to watch for next month's newsletter as we will announce our UWYV 2020 Scholarship winners and you'll be able to watch interviews with each recipient and learn more about their Ventures, their successes (and maybe setbacks), and hear about their future plans!

As always, we appreciate you and thank you for your continued support!

Changemaker Magazine 2020

Changemakers - - as we discussed earlier this month at our Virtual zoom meeting, anything you can send us for the 2020 Changemaker Magazine by April 24 would be incredibly helpful. This includes your Changemaking journey story (no more than 3 paragraphs), a headshot (we’ll need this for everyone), any quotes from either you or your students, photos you think demonstrate Changemaking in progress or outcomes. Please send to Lauren or Michelle. Thank you.

Longsjo United Way Youth Venture Team Pays It Forward
by Kristi Maloney

Organizing, cleaning, baking, reading, blogging and if I am being honest, playing games on my phone – a lot. These are the things that I am filling my days with. I am home, just like many of you who are reading this, due to the Covid-19 emergency in Massachusetts.

I often think about my UWYV students and I hope they and their families are all safe at home and doing well under these circumstances. I miss them!

I hear a lot about how people are paying it forward by acts of kindness. Many people are showing appreciation and thanking healthcare workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a time that parents are using to teach their kids kindness and compassion. Families are delivering groceries to the elderly, or implementing “TP Tuesday” (It’s a thing!) by delivering toilet paper and hand sanitizer to their neighbors. This wonderful news of paying it forward made me think of a Longsjo UWYV Team that is doing just that.

Expect Great Things from This Samoset Youth Venture Team
by Kristi Maloney

Youth Venture was buzzing along as usual at Samoset. In the blink of an eye, we went from our first day together on October 18, 2019, to my most recent visit on March 6, 2020, when teams were gearing up for the Spring Showcase.

Spotlight on McKay’s United Way Youth Venture Champion
Sarah Carnabucci
by Kristi Maloney

Fun fact! Did you know that our United Way Youth Venture Champion at McKay swam with sharks? I am finding out our Champions are inspiring in unexpected ways!

Learn more about her in this interview with McKay Arts Academy Middle School’s UWYV Champion, Sarah Carnabucci. She shares those shark pics, talks about her journey as a Champion, and lets us in on what she has been up to during this time of COVID-19 social distancing.
