Dear Friends,

The Prince George's County Council is in legislative recess until after Labor Day, but my staff and I have been hard at work all summer. There is a great deal happening and I anticipate a busy fall. Please engage with me on social media for regular updates about community events, legislation, and other news. I'm on Facebook and Twitter.

I echo the statement of Council Chair Derrick Leon Davis in response to the Charlottesville violence. I stand with him in emphatically stating that "hatred and bigotry have no place in our society and all of us must unite against those who seek to divide our nation."  Read Chair Davis's full statement here.

I am elated that the signs are pointing to the Purple Line moving toward the final step before groundbreaking and construction. This project is incredibly important to our entire County and Region. If you are a job-seeker or business owner, now is the time to engage in career and procurement opportunities. View job openings and register as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) or Minority Business Enterprise(MBE) on the Purple Line Transit Partners website.

Local business owners and entrepreneurs are invited to join me at two upcoming events.

On Monday, September 18, I am joining with the Office of Central Services and Supplier Development & Diversity Division for a County Connections event in District 3. This is the second in a series of business forums across Prince George's County to highlight and discuss public procurement and private sector projects. Register here

On Thursday, September 14, I am so pleased to join WETATi at their Entrepreneurship Think Tank Tour Business Training Series. This evening event will launch the 2017-18 competition and will take place from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the UMD Nyumburu Cultural Center. Register for the event here . Learn more about the Entrepreneurship Competition here

Each year the Prince George's County Council appropriates funds to support non-profit organization s throughout the County in the form of Special Appropriation Gr ants.  The Fiscal Year 2018 Special Appropriation Grant application is available now. District 3 grant applications are due by September 30.  Each Council Member has their own process for distributing grant funding and  I have formed a Citizen Advisory Committee to review grant applications and make recommendations. This is a competitive process as each year funding requests far exceed available funds. Learn more.

My staff and I organize d a Community Clean Up in Glenn Dale on the morning of Saturday, August 12, to remove bulky trash and pick up litter throughout the community. Thank you to all the residents who came out even though the wea ther forecast was iffy!

On September 8 and September 10 the UMD School of Public Health and Catholic Charities will sponsor the Mid-Maryland Mission of Mercy and Health Equity Festival to offer free dental care to 1,000 adults. Volunteers are needed September 7-10 to help set-up, escort patients, and more. Please join me in volunteering by registering here. Email MOM@CC-DC
.org with  questions about volunteering. If you need dental care or know someone who does, please see more information on the flyers on the right.

The Anacostia Watershed Society is working on innovative projects at University Park Elementary
and Riverdale Elementary as part of an integrated  set of efforts along Wells Run, a tributary of the Anacostia River. By installing stormwater best management practices at schools, churches, and other gathering places, AWS provides community connection,
engagement, and education opportunities. Read more about the UPES project here. This image is one of the concept drawings for Riverdale ES.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 16, when the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park and Riverdale Park will celebrate their 5th building anniversary with an Open House. I'm told this is the first time NOAA is opening its doors to the public! Visitors will have the opportunity to meet NOAA weather forecasters and hurricane hunter pilots. You can tour the forecaster's operations floor, the Oceanography Lab and the Air Resources Lab, see weather balloon launches and more. There will also be hands-on interactive science activities for kids. Learn more here.

My staff is in the planning stages for the 3rd Annual Parkdale High School College & Career Fair on Thursday, October 12, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Last year recruiters from more than 50 colleges, universities, and employers  hosted tables and w e are working hard to ensure even more attend this year. We will also host several short information sessions for students and parents. Please invite the high school students in your life to attend!

I share news and updates daily on social media. If you are active on social media, too, please engage with me on  Facebook   and follow me on  Twitter

As always, don't hesitate to reach out to me or a member of my staff if we can assist you in any way.
