July 14, 2017

Dear Friends,

Tuesday, July 18, will be the last County Council session prior to a summer legislative recess. There is so much going on in Prince George's County and across District 3 and my team and I will continue working hard for you throughout the summer!

Please join my colleagues and me for a Zoning Rewrite Town Hall meeting on Monday, July 17, from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the County Administration Building. If you can't attend in person, you can watch it online

CB-26-2017 will come before the Council for Public Hearing on Tuesday. The legislation will require vending machines on County property and at libraries to offer at least 50% healthy items and will ensure that items in the machines do not exceed certain sugar standards. MNCPPC has already approved a similar provision for all Parks and Recreation facilities and I am hopeful the County Council will do the same.

I join with my colleagues and Council Chair Davis in my extreme disappointment that the Trump Administration has cancelled the search for a new FBI headquarters. I strongly believe that Prince George's County had the two best sites for the consolidated headquarters. The continued delay of the Purple Line due to Judge Leon's decision is also incredibly frustrating--I've personally spent more than 10 years working on that project. I will continue to fight for the Purple Line to be built, but will also continue to to promote redevelopment and revitalization in District 3 with or without the Purple Line.

A major project that is in the early planning stages is SCMAGLEV, which would be a high speed train between Washington, DC and Baltimore. If you draw a line between DC and Baltimore, it is clear that this line would go straight through Prince George's County, likely through District 3.

I weighed in on the scoping report stating my concerns with the project, including concerns with the level of community outreach, environmental impact, and "that this SCMAGLEV Project will take people speeding through Prince George's County, literally and figuratively bypassing our communities, parks & recreational resources, economic development and more." I  will continue to weigh in and urge you to  sign up to receive notices about this project as well. Please stay engaged in this process.

In more positive news, I'm thrilled that the College Park Woods Playground is open and ready for play!

I am also working closely with the Town of Riverdale Park and the Department of Parks & Recreation to deliver a new playground at Riverdale Elementary. This playground will be used by Riverdale Elementary students during the school day and be open to the community evenings and weekends.

The renovated New Carrollton library is still on track to reopen next summer. View construction photos or check out the "Pop Up" locations and activities on the branch website

Rediscover College Park this summer -- the City of College Park is offering free parking  weekdays after 5:00 pm and all day Saturday and Sunday in the City Hall lot and the Downtown Parking Garage. The Discovery District Food Truck Hub is open for lunch weekdays at 5800 University Research Court.

Town Center Market in Riverdale Park also hosts Food Trucks Fridays from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

The Prince George's County Department of Parks & Recreation is offering an incredible array of activities this summer -- from concerts in parks, to yoga, to camps. Check out their new website and try something new this summer!

It was great to talk with residents of Seabrook at the July Seabrook Neighborhood Watch meeting this week. I'm always happy to speak to your civic association or organization!

My staff and I are organizing a Community Clean Up in Glenn Dale for the morning of Saturday, August 12, to remove bulky trash and pick up litter throughout the community. Residents: watch for a letter from me with more information or contact Wanda Brooks at 301-952-3060 or wjbrooks@co.pg.md.us to learn more.

I share news and updates daily on social media. If you are active on social media, too, please engage with me on
