ASA of TN has successfully engaged in a relationship with the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) to start apprenticeship programs at the Nashville campus. The first class of electrical apprentices began in September. Our second apprenticeship program for HVAC is progressing rapidly with projected start in the next few weeks. ASA of TN will continue to develop our relationship with the TCAT system and State Government Officials for all options to expand these programs state-wide to help meet the need for skilled labor in the commercial construction industry.
LEGISLATION
Ongoing negotiations between ASA of TN, ABC, AGC and others, continue for updating of Tennessee’s Prompt Pay Act to improve and protect payment rights for subcontractors and GCs. The next meeting with our bill sponsors, Senator Jack Johnson and Representative Ron Gant, and representatives from the many stakeholders’ groups, will be October 16th. This legislative effort springs from ASA of TN’s initial push to provide a “right to stop work for nonpayment” and relief from “Paid if Paid” contract language. ASA of TN supports a fair and workable solution that would ensure timely payments for work performed by all parties. Updates on progress will be forthcoming over the next few months leading up the 2020 legislative session of the TN General Assembly.
