An Update from the Office of Community Engagement and Constituent Services (CECS)

Dear Community Leaders and Members of Anne Arundel County,
Maryland Department of Health allocates vaccine doses to Anne Arundel County Department of Health each week. Unfortunately, we receive far fewer than we have the capacity to administer.
Additional doses are allocated to private sector providers, and each has its own registration portal. We would prefer to offer a one-stop pre-registration system, but each provider operates independently through state contracts. Please click the links above to be directed to each pre-registration system.
We will continue to provide information to our residents about these additional sites as the information is shared with us.
Best,
James Kitchin
Office of the County Executive
Director, CECS

Harness Creek Paddling/Rowing Facility at
Quiet Waters Park
|
|
A virtual public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. via the ZOOM.us platform by using the link above or the phone number(s) on the back of this announcement.
This meeting is being held to present the proposed design to construct a new rowing and paddling facility along Harness Creek in Quiet Waters Park. Harness Creek at Quiet Waters Park was identified as a potential site to construct a boating facility as a part of the County’s initiative to increase public access to local waterways and enhance water-related activities in the County. Construction schedules are not available at this time as this project is only in design phase. When construction begins, areas of work will be temporarily closed to ensure public safety.

In honor of Black History Month, we will be sharing Black history facts of #AnneArundel County throughout the month to highlight important yet often untold history of our county. Today we begin by highlighting George Phelps Jr., Anne Arundel's first Black law enforcement officer.
After applying for jobs with county and city police and being told African Americans need not apply, he met with then-Sheriff Joseph Alton Jr. and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff around 1950. On his first day, the office was flooded with calls claiming a Black man was impersonating an officer.
He served as a Deputy Sheriff for 25 years before retiring. During his tenure he created and served as Chief of a Special Deputies Unit of African Americans with 250 members. He remained an active community member until his passing in 2015.
Mr. Phelps broke this barrier in our county, paving the path for Black law enforcement officers, and he served our communities even when met with disrespect and racism. I hope we can all reflect on his story, realize it was not that long ago, and that we still have a ways to go.
