Taking Action to Address the COVID-19 Surge
A Message from the Health Officer Nilesh Kalyanaraman, M.D.
Over four weeks ago Anne Arundel County started to see a slow rise in our COVID-19 cases, one that we expected given the reopenings that took place on June 12 and 19. Two weeks ago the cases started to rise much faster. Last week, hospitalizations started going up and the trend continued this week. During this time, despite significantly increased testing, our percent positivity has risen from 3.1% to 4.7% and could reach the 5% threshold if we don’t take action. The rate of spread is 1.26 and growing which means that it’s spreading faster and faster (over 1 means it’s growing).

Expansion of the County's Eviction Prevention Initiatives
Last week, County Executive Steuart Pittman announced the county will pursue additional protections for families facing evictions and homelessness in the form of legal assistance to individuals and by expanding the county’s Eviction Prevention Program.

Department of Aging and Disabilities Saves a Life Through Telephone Reassurance Program
Last week, the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities Telephone Reassurance Program, a daily well-check call to isolated older adults, called on emergency resources to help an unresponsive client. Following program policy and procedures, staff was immediately able to identify that something was wrong and alerted 911. In partnership with the Police, the client, a female from Glen Burnie, was found in need of medical attention and was transported to a local hospital where she is recovering.

Maryland Nonprofit Recovery Initiative
Governor Hogan is allocating $50 million to the Maryland Nonprofit Recovery Initiative (NORI) to assist nonprofit organizations whose critical operations have been financially impacted by COVID-19 and state-of-emergency.
