March 20, 2026

Dear Buccaneer Families,

As we look forward to a vibrant spring, I want to personally invite you to join us this Saturday, March 21, for our Health, Wellness, and Safety Fair. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our families to connect with vital resources and celebrate our commitment to a healthy, secure environment for every student.

In this edition, we spotlight the individuals who make our district shine, starting with Justin Paul Sanchez.

Recently named an Essex County Unsung Hero, Justin embodies "Quiet Strength," proving that resilience and character speak far louder than any spotlight.

We also celebrate our newly crowned Mr. and Miss Belleville 2026, Tawfik Abubaker and Isabella Di Palma, whose leadership and character shone at this year’s pageant. This follows the monthly Board of Education meeting where we honored numerous students and staff for excellence in DECA, FBLA and national athletics.

Thank you for your continued support of Belleville Excellence. I hope to see you all this Saturday!

If you have any questions or comments, you can reach me at superintendent@bellevilleschools.org.

Educationally yours,

Dr. Erick Alfonso

Justin Paul Sanchez Honored as Essex County Unsung Hero

Last week, the Essex County School Boards Association, in collaboration with the New Jersey School Boards Association, recognized Justin Paul Sanchez as an Essex County Unsung Hero. This award celebrates students whose character and impact define the heart of their schools but who are often overlooked by traditional programs. Justin was honored for modeling "Quiet Strength: Character Beyond the Spotlight," a quality that inspires the entire school community.

The Unsung Hero Award recognizes those who contribute through good citizenship and resilience. These honorees often achieve significant success while overcoming insurmountable obstacles, including personal challenges, disabilities, or language barriers. Justin’s journey proves that success is about determination and the willingness to push forward despite any obstacle.

His grit and relentless pursuit of success define the very essence of Belleville Excellence. Belleville Public Schools is incredibly proud of this county-level achievement and excited to see what he accomplishes next.

From BHS Salutatorian to Global Icon: Celebrating Connie Francis

During Women’s History Month, Belleville Public Schools is proud to celebrate our most iconic alumna, the legendary Connie Francis. Before she was the "First Lady of Rock 'n' Roll" with over 100 million records sold, she was Concetta Franconero, a dedicated student in our very own classrooms. Connie famously balanced a blossoming music career with academic excellence, graduating as the Belleville High School Class of 1955 Salutatorian.

Her journey from our halls to the top of the Billboard charts made her the first female artist of the rock era to hit #1.

Today, her legacy remains a permanent part of our district’s landscape; in 2009, the high school auditorium was officially renamed the Connie Francis Theatre. This serves as a daily reminder to our students that a world-class career can begin right here in a Belleville classroom.

Beyond her musical hits, Connie’s life has been defined by her resilient spirit and her work as a passionate advocate for victims' rights and mental health. Following her passing in July 2025, we continue to be honored to claim her as a member of the Belleville family.  Her story continues to inspire our community, proving that with hard work and a Belleville education, any dream is within reach.
