UPDATE ON CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS WITH ACT-UAW LOCAL 7902, GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS DURING STRIKE

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you know, part-time faculty at The New School are represented by union ACT-UAW Local 7902. The New School is currently engaged in labor negotiations with the union, and the union has elected to initiate a strike in an effort to raise awareness about its economic demands in negotiations. The New School respects the rights of students, faculty and staff to voice their points of view, while also ensuring student access to quality educational instruction remains our top priority.

During this time, the university remains open and instructional activities are ongoing. Classes will continue to meet and students should plan to attend.

We have encouraged your student to keep up with their work and follow the alternative instructional plan outlined below if their instructor chooses to engage in the strike.

  • Complete the requirements and assignments on their syllabi to ensure they are continuing to make progress.
  • Utilize the asynchronous learning experience modules in Canvas to ensure opportunities for continued learning and to develop a shared foundation for dialogue across programs by addressing issues of particular importance to all students: migration, including climate change, race and genocide. The modules include readings, audio and video recordings that should be engaging and instructive for students across all programs.

Your student can also take the following steps should they require additional assistance:

We encourage you to review the student FAQ. It answers many of the additional questions you may have about what’s taking place. For details about the negotiations, you can read more on our website

We remain committed to supporting you and your student on their educational journey.
