ASD Volunteers are Wonderful
I'm going to keep this brief, because all I really want to say is THANK YOU to all of the amazing humans who volunteer for ASD in so many various ways. Your willingness to give your time and energy to help make our Appalachian home better for everyone is such an inspiration.
Monday, May 8, was the Doc at 100 fundraiser concert at Emory & Henry's McGlothlin Center for the Arts, benefitting ASD. It was a wonderful evening, with incredible musical talent and a lot of smiling, happy faces.
There is no way that event could have happened without our volunteers. We know you don't have to pitch in. But you do.
So to you, and to everyone who stands up to make an impact throughout the year, thank you. Everyone at ASD appreciates the work you do.

Fresh, local beef makes its way to regional schools
|
|
Regional schools purchased 4,200 pounds of fresh, locally-sourced ground beef in April! In total, school cafeterias in six counties (Buchanan, Lee, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, and Wythe) wowed students with menu items like spaghetti and tacos, all featuring Appalachian Harvest beef.
As a result of the rave reviews from nutrition personnel, Carroll County schools jumped aboard the beef wagon and purchased and received their first beef order in May.
We'll continue working with these schools and more to fill orders for the 2023-2024 school year. What an incredible start to the program!
If you would like to make a donation to keep this program going, please click the button below. We could not do this work without the help of your donations.

Agroforestry trainings for natural resource professionals
|
|
In collaboration with an inter-regional group of agroforestry leaders, ASD's Agroforestry program is launching a new series of workshops and online trainings created specifically for natural resource professionals.
These trainings are designed to help the experts who advise land managers learn more about silvopasture, alley cropping, and forest farming, to better prepare them to provide agroforestry technical assistance to their clients.
If you're a natural resource professional - or if you know someone who is - click the button to learn more.

Start Your Garden with Late Bloomers Starts
|
|
Our new Late Bloomers greenhouse lost no time in getting seeds into soil. Now, those little seeds have sprouted into well-loved starts, and they're ready to be lovingly re-homed.
If you need beefsteak tomatoes, zucchini, green peppers, sugar snap peas, basil, dill, or flowers like weeping amaranth, snapdragons, or sunflowers, then please, please stop by the greenhouse at the end of Singingwood Lane in Bristol.
The greenhouse is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (basically every weekday except Wednesday) from 9 to 3. You can also peruse the inventory and make a purchase online - just click the button below.

Join Us for Volunteer Day at the Tazewell Garden
|
|
The YMCA Four Seasons Garden in Tazewell, VA, is home base to our Groundwork workforce development program in Tazewell. There, participants learn sustainable agriculture basics, plus receive loads of personal, educational, and career resources and support.
Groundwork participants, led by garden supervisor David Gabbert, have worked so hard getting the garden into tip-top shape, and we'd love to have you stop by and see for yourself during Volunteer Day, which occurs every 3rd Friday.
The next Volunteer Day is May 19, specifically from 12 - 2 pm. You'll find us at 106 Gratton Road, Tazewell.
And speaking of Groundwork, they're still hiring! Applications and more info is just a click away...
