Hospice Bill's Fate is Up to MS Senate Public Health Committee
The MAFP is in favor of HB 1460, which would allow hospice medical directors to prescribe controlled substances for pain for terminally-ill patients without a face-to-face visit. Many of our members are hospice medical directors, so we feel this is an important bill. The regulation that was established is not the standard of care for hospice patients, so this bill is needed.

Registration Begins for
Spring Conference in Jackson
Varied speakers and a crawfish boil are the highlights of the upcoming Spring Conference, which will be held at the new Westin Hotel in downtown Jackson April 13 and 14.
The conference will kick off with a Friday night Crawfish Boil at the Reservoir with plenty of food and games. CME sessions will begin Saturday morning and last through Sunday afternoon. Exhibitors will be present and the conference will be held concurrently with the Spring Fling for Residents and Students on April 13. Register now!

Join the '70 for 70' Club to Honor Our Former Presidents
We applaud the 70 members who have led the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians over the 70 years we have grown as an Academy. Each of them has taken on the responsibility of leading the state's largest medical specialty association while also managing the duties of a busy medical practice.
We've established the '70 for 70' Club to help celebrate our milestone anniversary, remember our outstanding leaders and help build our Foundation. Help us honor one (or several) of these outstanding physicians by giving a donation to the MAFP Foundation in their name.
Here's how it works: MAFP members are invited to donate $70 to the MAFP Foundation in honor of one or more of the 70 former presidents of the MAFP. It takes a minimum of $70 to honor one past president, and donations in multiples of $70 to honor more than one past president. (For example, you may wish to give $140, and you may specify that $70 of your donation is in honor of our 1st president, Dr. Kety, and another $70 is in honor of our 70th president, Dr. Wheat.)
Donors will be recognized by name in the newsletter and other Academy publications. Act now and honor the former president of your choice!

'State of Family Medicine' Released
The Robert Graham Center, AAFP's research arm, has created an online resource called The State of Primary Care Physician Workforce, which gives state-level information on primary care physician characteristics. Using comprehensive national data, the report breaks down in detail the landscape of the primary care physician workforce.

AAFP Offers Vaccine Fellowships
The AAFP has two vaccine science fellowship positions available for family physicians. Fellows will develop a self-study project which will be promoted to AAFP members and public health officials.
The selected fellows will work with mentors to become more familiar with vaccine science and policy. They will have the opportunity to gain education and practical hands-on experience through meetings with leading public health experts, policy groups and vaccine manufacturers.
The fellowship time period is April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 and a nominal stipend is provided in addition to travel expenses. More information is available
on the AAFP website. The deadline for applying is March 22.
