A Prayer for Relief Workers

God our help and hope when waters rise, you brought Israel safely through the sea. Sustain all those who seek to save others, so that they may repair the ruined cities, raise up the former devastations, and be the restorers of streets to live in; through Jesus Christ, our eternal savior.

(based on Isaiah 58, 61)

Update on Relief Efforts

HURRICANE RELIEF

Thank you to all who contributed relief supplies for the victims of Hurricane Helene last week! They were packed up by SCAPC Pastoral Associate Ashley Brown, Christina Carlisle, and Matt McCann, and then transported by Ashley to Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in North Carolina where they were distributed to the community. This is a photo Ashley took of Beacon Village, a former mill village along the Swannanoa River. It was completely immersed in the flood waters. Most residents did not have flood insurance and are permanently displaced.

We are still working on arrangements for Hurricane Helene and Milton relief trips. Please visit our relief page for the most up-to-date information on our response efforts and email Pastor Sarah (sarah@scapc.org) if you are interested in serving on a "Rebuilding Hope" mission trip!

TORNADO RELIEF

A SCAPC RHINO team including (from left) Robert Mosely, Matt McCann, Greg Beuerman and Ruth Hickox (not pictured) traveled to Rolling Fork, Mississippi last weekend to install insulation in a home destroyed by a tornado last year.

BACKPACKS FOR THE BORDER

SCAPC members Rick Grubb and Laura St. Clair unloaded backpacks to be shipped to our global ministry partner, Caly Fernandez, at the U.S./Mexico border.

Adult Classes

“Genesis” September 8-November 24 | Phifer Library

The Bible’s first book contains many well-known stories, some familiar since childhood: creation and the garden of Eden; an ark full of animals adrift in a flood; Abraham and Isaac; the conniving Jacob; and the dreams of Joseph. Now hear these stories again in a new way, and in hearing, discover the knowledge that God created everything in goodness and love.

Click here for class recording: October 13, 2024

This coming Sunday's class will center on Genesis 18:1-33, "God Visits Abraham and Sarah; Abraham's Intercession", led by Beth Poe

“Faith at Home: A Handbook for Cautiously Christian Parents”

September 8 - November 24 | 2nd floor conference room

As parents, we strive to help our children develop a strong moral foundation, including a strong understanding of Christian faith. With so many contradictions from mainstream culture, however, many parents are left feeling as though religious language is a foreign language and are unsure how to incorporate faith practices into family life. Faith at Home aims to help parents learn this “second language” and introduce it to children in simple and meaningful ways.

This coming Sunday's topic will be "Seasons and Celebrations, part 2", led by Tyler Wheeler.

Scottish Heritage Sunday: October 27

On Sunday, October 27, Selley Series speaker Rev. Prof. David Fergusson of Cambridge University will preach at both services and lead a class on “Reformed Churches and the Arts.” David was installed as personal chaplain to the Queen in 2015 and in 2019 was appointed Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland and Dean of the Order of the Thistle. He took part in the memorial services for Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and took part in the 2023 Coronation of King Charles. WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO WEAR TARTAN!

We will incorporate worship elements from our denomination’s very beginnings, enjoy a rousing bagpiper procession, and recognize SCAPC’s 50+ year members. A reception will take place following the 10:30 service in Frampton Fellowship Hall, with music by the New Orleans Strathspey and Reel Society, the Gulf South’s own Scottish Fiddle Orchestra! There will be scones, shortbread, and other Scottish treats to enjoy.

Bakers Needed for Scottish Treats

We are seeking volunteers to bake shortbread, oatmeal and oatmeal lace cookies, mini-scones, and mini-lemon tarts for the Scottish Heritage Sunday reception. To sign up to contribute, click here. If you need them, recipes can be found on the sign-up form.

Aden Program for Elder Care

Last week, church member Harriet Riley led a poetry project for the Aden Program participants. Afterwards, Congregational Care Committee chair Nancy Ellis led a flower arranging activity using flowers from PW Simple Elegance that were donated by Ebie Strauss. Each participant brought a small arrangement home.

Writers & Artists Sought

We are looking for writers and artists of all ages (we’d love to get kid writers too!) who are interested in helping us create this year’s Advent devotional on our theme ‘Advent greetings from…’ where we’ll be thinking about advent from the perspective of different characters in the advent story. If you would like to compose a short devotional, about 300 words, for our Advent devotional books and web page, please contact Katie Brendler (katie@scapc.org) by Wednesday, October 23. You will then be given an Advent character (ex: Mary, Shepherd, etc.) and scripture reading from which to write a short reflection/Advent greeting from their perspective. We are also seeking artists to contribute drawings, paintings, or photographs, so please notify Katie if you wish to contribute art or have questions. You do not need to create new art but can send art you have already made.

YAF Pumpkin Carving Party

The Young Adults & Families (YAF) will hold their annual Pumpkin Carving Party this Friday, October 18 from 5-7 p.m. on the Land Building lawn. Pumpkins, carving and decorating supplies, pizza, drinks, and dessert will be provided! Please RSVP on the SCAPC app or our party page.

Café Reconcile Thanksgiving Catering

One of SCAPC's 20 community ministry partners is Café Reconcile, an education and training program for youth ages 16-22 to work in the hospitality/service industry, with particular emphasis on the restaurant business. The café's Thanksgiving catering orders opened yesterday, so we encourage you to visit their catering page before the dishes are all gone!

Challenger Retreat

This past weekend the Challenger Class (4th and 5th grade) spent the weekend at Tickfaw State Park learning about the Power of Prayer and different ways to communicate and listen to God. They also enjoyed an outing to the Pumpkin Patch.

Animal Blessing

A delightful host of pets and their owners lined up at the Land Building Sunday evening for our second annual Blessing of the Animals service! Pictured here are Brittany Colson and her cat Everest, and Chris Currie blessing Max and Margaret Maxwell's happy pups.

PW Simple Elegance

Presbyterian Women held their annual "Simple Elegance" dinner on Tuesday at the home of Ebie and Berney Strauss. Chaired by Lacey Lanier, Mary Martin Roth, Tyler Wheeler, and Annie Wilson, the party's theme was "Simple Elegance Goes to Hollywood" and was held in tribute to the late Sybil Favrot, 63-year member of SCAPC and former Simple Elegance hostess. 120 guests attended and 19 tablescapes were on display. $418 was collected for the Cents-Ability Presbyterian Women's hunger ministry. Jenny Baldwin (shown left with Marion Strauss) prepared a slideshow of the night's festivities!
