Greetings!

Happy Thanksgiving

Wishing the entire Chilkat Valley a peaceful holiday season with family and friends. Thank you to all who have made time to talk with us at Southeast Conference and AFN, and for all of your input over the years. If you know of others who would like to receive this eNewsletter, please send them my way, or they are welcome to sign up directly on our website.

New Hunting Policy on UA land

Hunting is now authorized on select UA land under the following restrictions and requirements:

  • Hunting is allowed for personal use only and must comply with all applicable state, federal, local, and municipal laws and regulations.
  • Hunting is prohibited on educationally designated land, land with active agreements, active land sales, and platted subdivisions.
  • Trapping is not allowed.
  • Specific areas may be restricted or removed for hunting activities at any time, so individuals are responsible for verifying whether a specific area is open for hunting by checking the interactive map.
  • Everyone is required to agree to the Release Waiver by clicking on the disclaimer on the interactive map.

For more details and to view the interactive map, please visit our website. Most of UA’s landholdings in the Chilkat Valley are authorized for hunting, but please reach out if you have any questions. I know many of you have asked for clarity on this topic for a long time, so we thank you for your patience.

Update on the Land Grant initiative

In our last eNewsletter, I mentioned that the State of Alaska recently issued a decision to relinquish the proposed lands along the Chilkat River on the Canadian border to the University. The State and UA have now submitted this selection to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. It is a multi-year process and we do not know if or when BLM would allow for conveyance. As we talked about in our last in-person visit, this area is outside of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Reserve.

Please visit our website for more information on the Land Grant Initiative, and click on the "Southeast" section to view the map of this selection. The State has not issued a public notice for the other two parcels in the Chilkat Valley.

I'm always happy to hear from you, so please reach out at UALandHaines@gmail.com.

Many thanks–
