Summer 2021: Another Year of Adaptation
Gales Creek Camp has been serving kids with type 1 diabetes and their families for almost 70 years. Over all that time, our mission hasn't changed.
Made in the late 1970s, this documentary shows that, while the management of type 1 diabetes has changed over the years, the mission of Gales Creek Camp has stayed exactly the same.
There is no substitute for the power of overnight summer camp to share experiences, build friendships, and get inspiration. Especially for our campers, Gales Creek Camp is a place of true belonging. There is no feeling in the world like being around people who get it. We don't take that lightly.

Our campyour campis unique in many ways. In a pandemic, some of those unique features become a challenge. The size of our cabins, for example, is typically something that we love because it allows campers to remain close and connected during their entire stay, rather than be broken into small groups. In terms of COVID-19, large cabins are a high risk factor for transmission. Also, we love that our campers come from all over the Pacific Northwest (and even Hawaii and Mexico!). But coronavirus loves to travel, too.

Just as important, GCC is primarily a volunteer organization, relying on fabulous and amazing volunteers, especially for the intense planning that is required for a medical camp to operate. Much of our team by necessity comes from the medical field, which remains under tremendous strain.

So while our planning and governance committees continue to monitor the situation, we're moving ahead without plans for overnight summer camp. But we're not settling for virtual camp, either.

We are confident we can be together safely if we eliminate some of our big risk factors, like bunking close together, eating close together, and combining campers from different areas. So we're planning exciting events without those things.

Drive-In Movie Night was a great example of that. If you missed it, see below.

Now we're planning several one-day programs for campers who live throughout the communities we serve. To reduce the chances of combining campers from different areas, if you live outside the greater metro area, we're coming to you!
It's GCC On the Road!
Here is the proposed schedule, for your planning purposes.

July 31 - August 1: Greater Portland/Vancouver area

August 7: Medford

August 8: Eugene

August 14: Bend

September 11 - 12: Family Camp(s)

We know our campers and families need to connect with each other and GCC this year. We're excited to make the most of this opportunity.
GCC Drive-In Movie Night!
If you missed Drive-In Movie Night, don't worry! Check out our video summary and watch the (fake) previews below. As we all know, sometimes the previews are the best part.
Preview 1: Highlights + Safety Rap. Thanks to Pyro for the COVID-19 safety reminders.
Preview 2: The Office. Thanks to the whole team for re-imagining Gales Creek Camp as The Office. As you can see, it wasn't a stretch.
Preview 3: Old Man Razor. This is the scary one ;-) Thanks to Jeb and his film-school brother for bringing the quality waaay up.
The next "Hope-mongering" parent support session is coming up!

Hope-mongering is a T1D parent and caregiver support program of Gales Creek Camp. We recruit an array of key voices from the T1D community: parents, young adults who grew up with T1D, health coaches, dietitians, T1D doctors and nurses, and of course the GCC summer camp crew.

It's a magic formula for conversation on raising a young person with T1D. We'd love for you to join us and add your voice, or just sit back and listen. Zero pressure.

The next session is April 15 at 7pm. Of course this is a virtual event, and you can join us online or via phone.
