Piano Project

The Public Art Team of the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA) is pleased to announce the Piano Project, an initiative to bring music and art to the Metuchen downtown area. Decorated pianos are being commissioned to enliven the downtown with an artistic intervention and provide people with a public amenity for their enjoyment and entertainment during the upcoming summer. This will be the second time that the pianos to be installed downtown, but the first time they will be decorated by artists.

Three outstanding artists have been selected through a competitive, open-call process:
  • Lawrence Ciarallo, Hoboken, NJ
  • Shauna Figueroa, Highland Park, NJ
  • Olga Muzician Pacilio, Fords, NJ

From May 22-June 18, these artists will be working on the pianos, with some work sessions scheduled for public observation of their process.

In collaboration with the Metuchen Arts Council, the MDA will hold a public celebration of the project with the piano artists and musicians on Friday, June 25 (rain date: Sat, June 26) at 7 PM. At the time of the celebration, the pianos will be located:
  • Station Place lot behind Hailey’s Harp and Pub
  • New Street between Lotsa Balls and Sushi Suzuki
  • Main Street sidewalk by Antonio’s Brick Oven Pizza

The pianos may be relocated half-way through the summer to give other venues opportunities for live music.

The artists will be scheduling work sessions (weather permitting) for public observation of their process. Please contact the MDA office at 732.515.9660 for a complete schedule, or for more information about the Piano Project.
