DISTRICT TO KICK-OFF 2019-20 KINDNESS INITIATIVE WITH KINDNESS CARNIVAL
Promoting kindness through a simple message of “Start with Hello” is the focus of the first-ever Kindness Carnival in the Boise School District. On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, from 12:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., hundreds of students will gather at Boise's Camel's Back Park to participate in this major kindness initiative.

A THIRD OF IDAHO'S NATIONAL NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS FROM BOISE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Officials from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) have announced the names of Idaho students selected as Semifinalists in the 65th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. A total of 30 students from the Boise School District have been selected as Semifinalists, which represents 34% of Idaho's total number of 2020 National Merit Semifinalists (87). That's an impressive showing considering Boise School District enrolls 8.3% of the public school students in Idaho.

Student's Research Paper Accepted:
A research paper by
Letizia Moro
(pictured),
a senior at Timberline High School, has been accepted to the 2019 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Vehicular Technology Conference. This month, Letizia will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii to present her research at this international conference and have it published on the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

Student Wins State Contest: Maxwell Jewell
(pictured), a student from Treasure Valley Math & Science Center (TVMSC) and East Junior High School, has won a cash award of $1,000 for the District of Idaho in a civics essay and video contest sponsored by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The name of the contest last year was “The 4th Amendment in the 21st Century – What is an ‘Unreasonable Search and Seizure’ in the Digital Age?” Second place was
James Giffen
from TVMSC/East, who won a cash award of $500.

Student Artwork Featured by NOAA:
Boise School District student
Taelyn Baiza
, 8th grade, North Junior High and TVMSC, has had her artwork (pictured below) featured for the second time by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The 2020 NOAA Marine Debris Calendar features a drawing of a nautilus that Taelyn submitted while in 7th grade. This is the second year in a row that a piece of Taelyn's artwork has been selected for the NOAA calendar.

Borah Grad Wins Emmy:
Congratulations to Jenn Rogien (pictured), Borah High School graduate, who won an Emmy Sunday night for Costume Design for the Netflix movie "Russian Doll." Jenn was an active member in Borah’s Theater and graduated from Borah with a scholarship to Yale.

North Jr. High Students to Participate in Hamilton Education Pilot Program:
The Hamilton Education Program Online (#EduHamOnline) will launch a pilot program this fall with 76 participating schools from across the country, including North Junior High School. Junior high school students will have access to the education program for the first time. They will join high school students who will engage in a custom-designed education program that integrates the study of American history with the performing arts.

District's Chief Financial Officer Selected for Award:
Nancy Landon (pictured), chief financial officer, Boise School District, has been selected as one of the 2019 Excellence in Finance honorees by the Idaho Business Review. She will be honored at an awards luncheon on October 10th. Nancy oversees the District's Accounting, Payroll and Purchasing Departments. Her work, and the work of her staff, has received numerous budget awards from the Association of School Business Officials International. Recently, the Boise School District received word that it is the first and only Idaho public entity (public bond issuer), and currently one of only 89 school districts in the nation, to earn a Aaa bond rating from Moody’s Investor Service. The Aaa rating is the top credit rating available for a government entity.
