Art of Childhood was a tremendous success! We saw smiling faces, had inspired conversations, and attendees were able to hear from two families who were generous enough to share their personal stories. We are so thankful for the outpouring of support we received from this community, thanks to you all we raised over $700,000, and $300,000 will go directly to help fund our free family counseling program. Thank you!
Mental health is an important topic that is not always easy to discuss, but the more we talk about it, the easier it becomes, and the associated stigma reduced. Suicide, in particular, can be the result of an untreated mental health condition, and throughout September, which is National Suicide Awareness Month, we want to tell you about some of The Children's Cabinet mental health services:
-
Free Family Counseling: Our sessions are available at no cost to families and youth in need of counseling support. Families meet with their therapist to develop a treatment plan to address concerns and improve family communication and functioning.
-
SOS Program: The Children's Cabinet offers suicide prevention screenings in all Washoe County Middle Schools and upon request from other schools. Through a guided DVD and discussion, students learn how to identify the symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts in themselves or their friends and encourage help-seeking through the use of the ACT technique (Acknowledge, Care, Tell).
-
Safe Place: Our Safe Place helpline and network of walk-up sites provides Washoe County teenagers with a safety net to deal with a dangerous or threatening situation they are not prepared to deal with on their own. Youth can call 1-800-536-4588 any time, 24/7, to receive help from a Children's Cabinet case manager.
-
Wraparound Support: Wraparound support is offered to every child and family who contacts the Children's Cabinet. This support involves meeting with a case manager to assess the family and youth's unmet needs. From there, you will work with your case manager to create family-centered goals and determine how much week-to-week support you want to have.
-
Connect with Your Teen: In just one hour, the Connect with Your Teen Workshops, teach parents about the importance of their child’s sense of affiliation, sense of achievement, and opportunities to feel non-painful emotions. Parents are equipped with concrete strategies for engaging differently with their children on a daily basis based on the concept of Living Ideation.
We are here to support children and families. Please contact us if you need assistance, or you need help finding resources. If you, or anyone you know, is experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, please dial 988 to access the new Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
One final thank you to our amazing supporters - you make our mission possible, to keep children safe and families together.
Thank you!

September is also Hunger Action Month
|
|
Every year in September, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN) and the Feeding America network of food banks come together for Hunger Action Month to raise awareness not only of the issue of food insecurity but of the impact our community can have when we take action together.
Want to support FBNN? Here are some fun activities throughout the month:
- Wear orange on September 23: bring awareness to Hunger Action Month.
- Strike Out Hunger: The Reno Aces and FBNN are challenging their intrastate rival, the Las Vegas Aviators and Three Square Food Bank in southern Nevada to see who can raise the most funds throughout the month. Donate and donate often to find out!
- Battle Born Burger Showcase-Showdown: this is a two-part event. First, visit several restaurants around town and order a yummy burger. For each burger sold, a donation will be made to FBNN. Then on September 30, FBNN is hosting a food truck event (the Showdown!) at Idlewild Park, to vote for the best burger entry.
- Hunger Action Day Community Food Drive Competition: SCHEELS has challenged Dick's Sporting Goods to see who can raise the most food donations during this food drive. Visit either location from 9 a.m. until noon on September 23 to help your favorite sporting goods store win.
For details on these events, please visit their website and help us support FBNN.

In response to community mental health needs, The Children’s Cabinet has partnered with Renown Health, Washoe County School District, and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention to achieve 5 broadly defined strategic activities to strengthen networks of care for teens and adolescents and their families. These are to:
- Combat deaths by suicide through the expansion of prevention, treatment, and family-centered support services
- Develop a multi-tiered communication strategy, centering around developing non-traditional partnerships and joint messaging with an emphasis on eliminating the stigma of mental health
- Advance linkages of community support services, government, and health practitioners
- Strengthen, expand, and support interventions and programs within specific environments by building creative and non-traditional care avenues
- Improve and support data collection, analysis, and dissemination efforts for behavioral health needs
Access the Resource Directory below, which will lead you to a comprehensive list of organizations in our area that support youth mental health needs.
