WEEK OF FEBRUARY 24 - MARCH 3

From the Village Manager Tyler Burkart

Village Approves Updated Special Events

Permit Ordinance and Application

The Village Board just approved a new special events permit ordinance and application process. Any special event open to the public requesting Village resources established on public property or the public right-of-way shall require a permit. Certain Park rentals such as the shelters, fields, and community room spaces shall be exempt from being identified as a special event unless requiring additional Village resources. The permit application fee is $100. Applications shall be submitted 60 days in advance of the event to allow staff time to review the application and receive Village Board approval, if required. The Village Board can waive fees for an event to fundraise and give proceeds back to the community. If a fee is waived, Village staff will reimburse the applicant within 30 days of the Village Board’s action. This application can also be used for a Transient and Temporary Outdoor Entertainment permit or a Parade permit. A Transient and Temporary Outdoor Entertainment permit is for live or prerecorded music to a group of more than ten persons in a nonresidential zoning district. Applicants requesting this permit for music and no other Village services will require an application fee of only $25. Parade permit is still $100.

If you are planning to use Village resources on public land, click here to view and start the application process. If you have questions about the application, feel free to contact Village Clerk Caren Brustmann at 414-371-3050 or email Caren at [email protected]

Village Working with Because We Care and Local Churches to Serve Others in Brown Deer

The Village of Brown Deer is collaborating with the local community service organization Because We Care (BWC) and several local churches to help pick up trash and do spring yard clean-up for those who are seniors or have accessibility/mobility challenges. The clean-up and yard maintenance dates will be May 13, May 27, and June 10, starting at the Village Department of Public Works at 9 a.m. Vests, bags, gloves, and trash pickers will be provided by the Department of Public Works thanks to ongoing support from the Brown Deer Foundation. However, if a community group is able to provide additional bags or bring their own gloves, along with any required rakes, shovels, loppers, etc., that would be greatly appreciated. Beverages will also be available for volunteers. If you are a part of a community group that would be interested in volunteering, contact Jim Farmer and Rob Guilbert at [email protected]. Anyone who needs to request service at their home on one of these three days can contact Village Manager Tyler Burkart at 414-371-3051 or email at [email protected]. Requests must be submitted at least one week prior to the scheduled clean-up date.

In addition, BWC will be hosting the semi-annual Village-wide clean up on April 22 at 9 a.m. meeting at Brown Deer United Methodist Church. Contact Jim and Rob if you are interested in participating in that.

A huge thank you to Because We Care for their help and support. BWC is a community service organization started a few years ago with funding from the Brown Deer Foundation. Members work with our DPW to pick up litter, and also to improve our Village through volunteering at community events, serving as poll workers and taking on other stewardship initiatives. Brown Deer residents care about each other, and BWC is a great way to get involved in our community.

Brown Deer Police at the BDSD Career Resource Fair

On Wednesday, February 15, 2023 the Brown Deer Police Department was able to participate in the Brown Deer Middle/High School Career Resource Fair. Officers Riká Calvin and Jacob Lord attended representing the police department. They were able to provide information to students on qualifications and requirements to be a police officer. They also showcased the high quality of services the Brown Deer Police Department provides to the community and the interesting employment opportunities in an agency like ours. We are grateful for the invitation from the school district and are glad we were able to provide helpful information to those interested in a career in law enforcement. We hope that Brown Deer students who strive to enter the law enforcement profession choose to stay in their community and select the Brown Deer Police Department.
