What is a Mill Rate and How Brown Deer’s Mill Rate Compares to the North Shore | |
|
While the summer is a great time for several families and community members to go on vacation, Village of Brown Deer staff are hard at work preparing for the 2024 preliminary budget. This will be an intriguing budget for Brown Deer as we try and utilize the additional shared revenue to address some problematic areas for the Village while doing our best to give tax relief to taxpayers. Staff will also work with elected officials on using the 700+ community survey responses to allocate funding based on areas of importance as indicated through the survey results.
One question the Village gets frequently is regarding our mill rate and how it compares with other municipalities. In simple terms, the mill rate is the tax rate a municipality uses to calculate property taxes. Municipalities figure out the mill rate each year by figuring out the total assessed valuation of the community along with the total levy needed to fund services. The final mill rate then allows the municipality to compute each property’s share of the taxes by taking that property’s assessed valuation, multiplying it by the mill rate, and then dividing it by 1,000.
| | If you’d like to research more information on Brown Deer’s mill rate, check out the State of Wisconsin Department of Revenue website here. This will allow you to learn how the tax levy is divided by each taxing jurisdiction and their share. You will also see that Brown Deer has the second lowest mill rate out of the seven North Shore municipalities as Whitefish Bay is the only municipality with a lower mill rate. Municipalities outside of Milwaukee County will have lower mill rates and a reason for that is the county’s share of the tax levy is at a much lower percentage. If you have any questions regarding the village’s budget or mill rate, feel free to reach out to me, Village Manager Tyler Burkart, at tburkart@browndeerwi.org or call 414-371-3051. The Village anticipates to present the 2024 preliminary budget to the Village Board and the public on September 18 and will consider adoption of the 2024 budget on November 20. | |
