WEEK OF DECEMBER 30 - JANUARY 6

From the Village Manager Tyler Burkart

Trustee Woods Sworn-in to Complete Term of Office

On Wednesday, December 28, the Village held a swearing-in ceremony for Trustee Jeffrey Woods. Trustee Woods will be completing the term vacated by Trustee Siegrist through April 2024. Thank you to all the friends, family, and community members who came to attend the ceremony. A special thank you to Village Clerk Caren Brustmann for helping with the oath of offices. Holding any public office is a difficult yet honorable commitment. As Village Manager, I greatly appreciate it when members of the public devote their time serving our community. If you would like to contact a Village Board member, feel free to find their contact information on the Village website.

Speaking of public service, I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage all community members to consider applying for a Village volunteer committee. This is a great way for you to begin serving our community, meet other members in the community who share a similar passion, and make a positive impact for your neighbors. You can read about all of our volunteer committees on the website as well as begin applying online. The Village Board approved the adoption of a new committee: the Human Relations Committee. The committee was created to advocate for the rights and values of the community through the protection of human and civil rights. Read here if you are interested in learning more about the committee. Make sure to apply by early April to be considered for any openings on these volunteer committees.

As a final reminder, Village Board meetings will now start at 6 p.m. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 3 and will be virtual. You can access the call-in information on the Village website.

Federal Funding Secured for Ten Mile Park

The Village is excited to announce the funding for Ten Mile Park was secured through the final government funding package approved at the federal level on December 23. A total of $2,496,630 is earmarked for the creation of Ten Mile Park in Brown Deer. Click here for the full list of projects approved that are a part of Congresswoman Moore’s district.

Planning efforts for Ten Mile Park have been underway since 2018 when the land was acquired by the Village. This site is the area adjacent to the Oak Leaf Trail just south of Brown Deer Rd. Due to its proximity to the trail as well as its visibility and accessibility from Brown Deer Rd., this site has great potential as a community park for so many people of all ages to enjoy. The name “Ten Mile” derives from the Ten Mile Post Office that originally was erected near the site and serves as the ten-mile marker from downtown Milwaukee.

The Village is anticipating this work to start soon in 2023. The Village will assure the community stays informed on planning efforts and be given an opportunity to provide feedback on design concepts. We are excited to watch this plan come to fruition. If you have any questions, please contact Community Development Director Nate Piotrowski at npiotrowski@browndeerwi.org or call 414-371-3061.

Introducing New Town Hall Series

The Village of Brown Deer is excited to introduce a new series of town hall meetings so that you can get the latest news and information on village initiatives. The “Get to Know Brown Deer” Town Hall series will offer residents, businesses, and visitors a chance to learn more about the community in which they live, work, and play.

These sessions will be held both in-person and virtually, with a recording of each session available on our website for those community members unable to attend. The Village hopes these sessions allow the public to learn more about Brown Deer while giving staff a venue to observe public perspectives.

Get to Know Brown Deer Town Hall:

Building an Environment for Community and Economic Opportunities

Our first session in the “Get to Know Brown Deer” Town Hall series will take place on Thursday, January 12 at 6:00 PM at Brown Deer Village Hall and online. This session, titled Building an Environment for Community and Economic Opportunities, will focus on the Village’s role when it comes to working with businesses, establishing land uses for a wide variety of demands, and creating future opportunities for economic development. Presenters Tyler Burkart, Village Manager, and Nate Piotrowski, Community Development Director, will showcase several areas staff and officials are engaging with developers and other parties to improve that space for the community. The presentation will also capture how park and open space is used to enhance residential and commercial areas in Brown Deer. Lastly, the Village will provide an update on future projects, such as Ten Mile Park, the Farmers Market, the Comprehensive Park Plan, and anymore that come to fruition. Future sessions for 2023 will entail meeting and engaging with elected officials who represent Brown Deer at several levels of governments, policing strategies to combat crime trends, and public works services available to the public.

Questions about the town hall series can be directed to Kerry Hoey, Village Marketing & Communications Coordinator, at khoey@browndeerwi.org

Smoke Alarms in the House

Installing your smoke alarms correctly, and making sure they are in working order, is an important step to making your home and family safer from fire. It's important to have enough smoke alarms in your home. Fire research has demonstrated that with today's modern furnishings, fires can spread much more rapidly than in the past when more natural materials were used. Because of this, having a sufficient number of properly located smoke alarms is essential to maximize the amount of available escape time.

For many years has required as a minimum that smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom (even for existing homes) in addition to requiring them outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. (Additional smoke alarms are required for larger homes.) Homes built to earlier standards often don't meet these minimum requirements. Homeowners should recognize that detection needs have changed over the years and take proactive steps make sure that every home has a sufficient complement of smoke alarms.

Learn more about installing, testing, and replacing your smoke detectors here.
