October 2021 Sermon Series Beyond Normal:
The Future of the Christian Church in America.
Our lives have been turned upside down in the last 18 months. We have gone through isolation, working from home, virtual school, not seeing family and friends, and quarantine. We have had to make decisions based on the amount of risk we are willing to take in our daily lives. What should we do, where should we go, and whom should we be around?
Worship and church activities were not exempt from people’s decisions about risk and safety. As a church, we decided for the safety of everyone to suspend in-person worship and ministry events for several months. We created different ways to worship and be together, like worship recordings, live streaming, and Zoom Bible Studies. Even with going back to modified in-person worship and ministry, each person and family continue to make the best decisions for them.
A phrase that gets said a lot these days is, “I just want things to go back to normal.” Everyone has their meaning in using this phrase, but usually, it is said because we remember what life was like before COVID-19 and prefer that life over now. In reality, the preCOVID “normal” had its struggles and challenges, especially the state of the Christian church in America. Overall mainline Christian churches in America have been declining in participation and membership for decades. This pandemic has accelerated the need to reevaluate who we are as a church and what God is calling us to do. One thing is for sure; we cannot go back to normal; we need to go beyond normal.
Each week in October, we will be focusing on a different aspect of how we can go beyond normal. As we get ready to celebrate the Reformation, we will be talking about how we as a church need to reform for the future. We will also be highlighting many of our ministries and discovering how each person can use their time, talents, and financial resources to further God’s plan for Advent.
You are invited to come as God leads and guides us on this journey to discover who we are and what God wants us to do.
Week 1: Oct 2/3 Theme: Who are we?
Before we figure out what and where God wants us to do and go, we need to remember who we are. We are forgiven children of God! Embracing that God chose us and sent Jesus to die for our sins, we can fully live into our identity as a forgiven child of God. Theme Scripture: Romans 5:1-11
