The Hawai‘i School Facilities Authority (SFA) team of professionals may be small, but we made big strides to advance our mission. It is a privilege to serve Hawai‘i’s educators, students and families and we’re proud to end the year on a high note!
We’re making progress on several fronts. Here are some highlights:
Since the 2023–2024 school year—the launch of Lt. Governor Sylvia Luke’s Ready Keiki initiative—SFA has completed renovations to more than 70 preschool classrooms on Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE) campuses.
We also completed three prekindergarten classrooms at Waialae Elementary Public Charter School (PCS) which opened in 2025-2026 school year.
In addition to classroom renovations, SFA also partnered with the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa to build eight preschool classrooms on the ground floor of Hale Haukani, a new graduate student housing complex.
We have begun to gather community feedback on a new Central Maui middle school for 600 students, targeting an opening in the fall of 2030.
We are also moving forward with the workforce housing development on the campus of Mililani High School.
Happy Holidays!
Executive Director Riki Fujitani Shares about National Recognition
with Hawai‘i Public Radio
Catherine Cruz of Hawaiʻi Public Radio recently invited SFA Executive Director Riki Fujitani to share more about the planned Central Maui school in Waikapū for "The Conversation." The school, which is still in the preliminary planning stages, received a national design award for its innovative, sustainable approach — including the use of mass timber.
This recognition reflects the strong collaboration behind the project. Mahalo to Haiku-based Hawai‘i OffGrid, Mauiʻs largest architecture and engineering firm, for their forward-thinking design team’s initiative to make this award possible.
When the idea of teacher workforce housing at Mililani High School was first introduced last year, the Mililani community naturally had a lot of questions and concerns. SFA took the time to listen and understand the communityʻs concerns and modified the location of the workkforce housing to another part of the sprawling campus. In an interview with KHON2's Stephen Florino, SFA's Program and Policy Officer Cheri Nakamura explained the progress of the Mililani Teacher Housing project over the past year. The community recently gave a thumbs up to SFA and its nonprofit development partner, Pacific Housing Assistance Corporation, for their newly proposed plans. The housing project, originally proposed to be near the current agricultural program, has been relocated to the lower campus near to the athletic facilities. An environmental assessment is now underway. Mahalo to Mililani Waipiʻo-Melemano Neighborhood Board Chair Danielle Bass and Mililani Mauka-Launani Valley Neighborhood Board Chair Dean Hazama for using their neighborhood board meetings as a forum to bring the community together and as avenues for SFA to provide regular updates to the community members.
