Letter From Mr. James
Hi Everyone,

I just posted this information into my Schoology folders for all classes but I thought it would be worth getting into the newsletter because it is a great resource for the students:

Ballard Band and Percussion Students: Due to schools all over the country shutting their doors, the makers of SmartMusic have allowed for FREE access to their program and their wealth of musical resources through June 30th. This is VERY exciting as you can search for and learn parts (and play along) from thousands of pieces, work on jazz improvisation, find all major method books, exercises, and solos for your instrument. This is a great resource that you should take advantage of while you are home these next several weeks.
To create your FREE account, you need to go to:   https://admin.smartmusic.com/join
Sign up with the Ballard Band and Percussion Class code: XADC4-TRUY7

I hope you have fun with this resource. It can't replicate the joy of being together and making music with each other but hopefully it will provide some inspiration for you as you keep practicing your instrument.
Stay well!
-Mr. James

Jazz I Students
To the Jazz I students from the Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival organizers:

Monterey Jazz Festival is celebrating the 50 th Anniversary of the Next Generation Jazz Festival. Since we cannot be together, we want to share in celebration with you on our social media platforms.

  • Starting on April 3rd through April 9th, we will post clinics from jazz artists including Gerald Clayton, Ambrose Akinmusire, Derrick Hodge, Allison Miller, and MJF Artist in Residence, Christian Sands. Please tune in on Instagram for some great information and demonstrations.
  • We are planning a Q&A with Derrick Hodge, so please send me your questions by Thursday, April 2nd and then tune in for the answers. Email questions to renae@montereyjazzfestival.org
  • We are also asking you to post videos of yourself playing or singing your favorite jazz tune or improvising a solo on Instagram and tag @montereyjazzfestival and use #ngjffromhome and #virtualngjf. We want to hear what you are working on these days.
  • Directors, if you have a video of your band performing, we would love to have you post that video as well.
If you would like to read more, here is a link to the press release.

Thanks for celebrating with us!
