Partners for Clean Air annual awards going virtual
Event to honor local organizations for air quality improvement efforts

The Northwest Indiana Partners for Clean Air Awards ceremony is now a virtual event, partners announced today.

The event, previously scheduled for August 7th at the Hammond Port Authority, will now take place in an online format. The Partners for Clean Air 2020 Virtual Awards Ceremony is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2020.

The virtual event will feature speakers, scholarship award winner recognition, the annual awards ceremony, and recognition of program members.

Indiana Department of Environmental Management Commissioner Bruno Pigott will provide an update on Northwest Indiana air quality as part of the virtual event.

Four awards will be presented for voluntary actions taken to improve air quality during 2019, one in each of the following categories: business, municipal, industrial and the Mark Siminski Bicycle Award. The winners were selected from among nominees submitted to the Partners for Clean Air Steering Committee earlier this year.

The winners of the first ever Partners for Clean Air scholarships will be recognized. Abigail Glover of Valparaiso High School and Taryn Schermer of La Lumiere School in La Porte were each selected to receive $2,500 scholarships from among the participants in the competitive essay contest this spring.

The virtual event is free, but registration is required. Register online at https://bit.ly/2WqFSLC.

About Partners for Clean Air
Partners for Clean Air is a coalition of Northwest Indiana businesses, industries, local governments, community groups and individuals committed to improving overall air quality and public health through voluntary actions. Members of the Partners for Clean Air Program develop Air Quality Action Plans designed to be implemented on Air Quality Action Days as a way of reducing harmful pollutants.

About Air Quality Action Days
Air Quality Action Days (AQADs) are days when ground level ozone pollution or fine particulate matter could build to unhealthy levels in the outdoor air. IDEM issues AQAD advisories for ozone and PM2.5 based on air quality forecasts, air quality standards, and Air Quality Index (AQI) categories. When AQADs are predicted, Hoosiers can take action to protect their health and protect air quality. For more information and to subscribe to alerts, please visit www.smogwatch.IN.gov.
