EU Campaign already delivered promising results |
The campaign
, which featured hart-hitting evidence obtained by AA investigators at auctions, feedlots and slaughter plants, called attention to the cruelty and neglect horses face (particularly in Canada, Argentina, and Uruguay) when they are sold for slaughter. Through press releases and never-before-seen video, we shared the sad truth, from freezing temperatures to non-existent medical treatment to out-right abuse.
Since the simultaneous release in 10 different countries, the story has been featured in all major newspapers and many television stations. Even more importantly, several large companies have reacted to the public outcry:
- Albert Heijn, the largest Dutch supermarket chain with close to 1,000 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium, announced it has stopped the sale of all horse meat sourced from Canada, Uruguay, and Argentina.
- Aoste, a well-known French charcuterie brand that also retails in Belgium and Germany, is no longer selling products containing horse meat sourced from the countries exposed in the campaign.
These actions are a huge win for horses and for the people who care about their welfare. By reducing the number of stores that sell horse meat in Europe, we are significantly decreasing the quantity of horse meat imported to the European Union, the number of horses being killed each year, and the profits generated by callous slaughterhouses.
The international response to this latest effort is a testament to the dedication of the Animals' Angels community. So many of you have shared our campaigns and investigations on social media, educating your family and friends about this cruel industry and encouraging wide-spread change. We are so thankful to be able to celebrate this exciting victory with you!

Dennis Chavez Expose - Animals' Angels supporters give voice to the voiceless
|
In our
last newsletter, Animals' Angels shared the tragic and infuriating story of foals, as young as three weeks, being separated from their mothers and shipped over 1,000 miles in horrible conditions. We also explained that these cruel transports was approved (according to
health certificates) by a New Mexico veterinarian: Florian Sanchez.
After our newsletter was released, the foals' story and Dr. Sanchez' role
went viral. The article received international exposure, and hundreds of people flooded the veterinarian's phone line to express their frustration & anger at how these foals had been treated.
Animals' Angels also heard from a number of kind-hearted people who bought the young horses after their cross-country transport. These individuals confirmed that the foals-those that had survived the journey-were in failing health and some had died soon after their purchase.
Many were willing to provide crucial evidence, like veterinary reports and photographs. We have gathered all of this information and have submitted an
extensive formal complaint package to the New Mexico Veterinary Board. Our most vulnerable creatures certainly deserve better-especially from businesses that claim to "protect animals' health and wellbeing."
We have also reported Dennis Chavez to USDA APHIS IES (the Investigative Enforcement Unit of the United States Department of Agriculture) and we
were informed that an official investigation has been launched.
Animals' Angels has also received a
number of threats in response to this story, but we will not be silenced when animals' lives are at risk. We are inspired by our supporters, like you, who have boldly made your voices heard by calling Dr. Sanchez' office, writing letters to your representatives, and coming forward with personal stories.
Thank you for standing up for animals!
