The M-119 Tunnel of Trees Scenic Heritage Route Committee and the Little Traverse Conservancy are hosting an M-119 Scenic Heritage Route Fall Symposium September 21. The symposium starts at 2:30 pm at Readmond Township Hall, 6034 Wormwood Lane, Harbor Springs. Prior to it, there will be a field trip at 1:00 p.m. at the Seberon “Boo” Litzenburger Nature Preserve, on Five Mile Creek Road just off M-119 about six miles north of Harbor Springs. The symposium will include land protection options presented by the Little Traverse Conservancy, a discussion of tree health and road safety by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and a presentation about corridor improvements by Emmet County Planning and Zoning. The Little Traverse Conservancy is supporting the “Independence Hunters” again this year by providing land on which to hunt and volunteers to guide hunters on these preserves and working forests. Disabled hunters and veterans are hosted by local organizations. We are asking for anyone who wishes to donate to this great cause to contact us. GLCO announces Little Waves children’s music program Petoskey District Library and Charlevoix Public Library are hosting "Little Waves," a young children's music program. Free and open to the public and sponsored by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra (GLCO), the program is designed to introduce young children (ages 4 - 10) and their families to music in an entertaining setting. Each event takes place on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. in Petoskey and 1:00 p.m. in Charlevoix. Fall dates are Sept. 10, Oct. 8, and Nov. 12. The theme for 2022/2023 is "Musical Adventures.” Each unique drop-in session features a multimedia story, an opportunity to hear one or more GLCO musicians demonstrate and explain how their instruments work, and fun music-related activities for kids. The City of Petoskey Parks and Recreation Department is issuing a detour on the Little Traverse Wheelway around Bayfront Park West while work is being done to improve access to Solanus Mission Beach. Improvements will take place within Bayfront Park West. Westbound users can follow the sidewalk by the Water Street Condo’s to West Lake Street then access the trail in front of Solanus Mission Church. The detour will begin Tuesday, September 6 and should be completed by the end of the month. Users are encouraged to explore different sections of the wheelway during this time. Trail will be available for use after affected areas are completed.
