What's Staying the Same - Buprenorphine/Naloxone
Buprenorphine/Naloxone
Single entity buprenorphine (e.g. Butrans patches) and buprenorphine products for vet use will remain a Type 1 TPP drug so registration with TPP Alberta and use of the secure TPP pad are still required .

The CPSA encourages physicians to c omplete of an online buprenorphine/naloxone prescribing course. The following courses are recommended:
What's Staying the Same - Methadone
Methadone
Alberta physicians are required to have specific education and training in order to prescribe methadone safely for their patients. For initiating or maintaining methadone treatment, physicians must apply to the CPSA for  OAT approval .

General (initiate) Opioid Use Disorder (OUD):
  • Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) Course
  • Experience in an OAT setting or evidence of appropriate postgraduate training

Patient Specific (maintain single or multiple patients):
  • Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) Course
  • Letter of support from OAT clinic for each patient

**The CPSA no longer requires for physicians to do a post-training preceptorship in order to prescribe methadone. Completion of the Alberta Opioid Dependency Treatment Virtual Training Course or its equivalent is all that is required.**
