Luthier's SIG - Every Wednesday Night!

Build Your Own Guitar with Luthier!

Story by Gary Correia

About a year ago, building a guitar seemed like too large of a task to handle. Well I finished the guitar under the leadership of Mike Davis in the Wednesday night SIG Luthier Group work sessions.

I used Bubinga back & sides with a spruce top. With Mike’s patience, direction & knowledge, he led the group through the various stages from raw lumber to the finish. We’ve all worked at our own pace and everyone is at various stages of completion.

I’m so grateful to Mike who has spent countless hours hauling all his jigs to & from the Shop every Wednesday night and for his instruction. A very dedicated work worker & luthier. I’ve attached a few pics with Mike & the new guitar.

Education Survey Results

2022 Education Survey: Thanks for your response!

The SDFWA Education Team would like to thank the almost 300 members who completed the 2022 Education Survey. Your feedback will help the team continue to provide the top-notch educational experiences that you’ve come to expect and design new classes and experiences that reflect members’ evolving interests.

Through your feedback, we learned that you value the classes we offer and are impressed with the quality of instruction provided by our volunteer instructors and TAs. We learned that there is strong interest in existing courses, with the notable interest reflected in our digital tools offerings (particularly the effective use of the laser, CNC, and Shaper Origin), and our turning courses. Finishing, hand tool joinery, workbench jigs, and box making were also favorites among survey respondents.

Common recommendations included in the comments section reflected a desire for more classes designed around specific projects, as well as classes for advanced woodworkers. Several respondents asked the Team to review the cost of classes, and to look at the way we might link mentoring opportunities, SIGs, and other learning opportunities to the courses that we offer.

The Education Team is meeting in early October to establish priorities for 2023. The survey responses, including the highlights above, will be front and center as the Education Team continues to improve and expand the SDFWA’s educational offerings.

Did you know? - Nancy Bosecker

Did you know?

Meet Nancy! You may have made wood shavings with Nancy, had her help you with a project during one of her shop supervisor shifts, rub elbows with her at a board meeting (she is the SDFWA secretary), or interacted with her regarding a class at SDFWA (she is the Admission Director). She is an uber-active member of the shop!

But did you know that Nancy Bosecker is WILD about game shows? She was a participant on Jeopardy and met Alex Trebek before his passing in 2020. In her spare time she judges hackathons, and coming up this week on Wednesday 9/15, she will appear on the TV game show "25 Words or Less" with Meredith Vieira. The show features two teams of celebrities and civilians competing in a fast paced word game for prizes.

"Lisa and I had to come up with a "gimmick" so the claims of our Ghost Hunting prowess may have been exaggerated. We had a surreal and fantastic adventure, though, and we're pretty sure we made Meredith Veiera laugh so it was all worth it!"

Don't forget to tune to see our own game show celeb, Nancy Bosecker! Don't forget to say hi to Nancy the next time you see her at the shop!
